CAMPAIGN: Tillery’s funds
surpass those of Kinman
>- From Page 1
While both candidates say they have been
spending time “knocking on doors,” the
numbers suggest they have taken very dif
ferent approaches to campaign fund
raising.
Tillery brought in $2,550 in large contri
butions — or those more than $101 — and
$835 in smaller ones. For Kinman, those
numbers are inverted, with $3,808.05 coming
from small donors and large gifts accounting
for only $800.
The two largest donors to her campaign
listed in the most recent report are a retired
professor and the attorney for the band

Kinman said she is “pleased and proud”

Con-artists go phishing for
gullible students via email

It creeps in through your
e-mail inbox, posing as a
legitimate message from a
company you might have
used before — SunTrust,
eBay or Citibank.
It asks you to confirm
some information.
So you click the link and
are taken to a Web site
where you fill out a form. It’s
normal stuff: name,
address, telephone and
credit card or account
number.
STOP — you’re about to
take the bait.
A new type of fraud has
started to hit Internet users.
It’s called phishing, when
con-artists fool people into
giving out private financial
information through an ille
gitimate Web site.
These crooks send out
spam e-mails that, in many
cases, look identical to ones
you would have received
from the actual company.
They then create a Web
site that mimics the style
and design of the original.
Even the links on this
Web page will usually take
you to the real company’s
Web site.
But there’s a big differ
ence. When you enter the
information and press the
send button, it is the crooks
who get your credit card
number, not the banks.
The increase in phishers
is largely due to the increase
in online shopping over the
past several years. Online
consumers — myself includ
ed — have become very
comfortable with giving out
credit card information
when purchasing products
online.
A study released last
month by TRUSTe, a non
profit Internet privacy
group, and NACHA, an elec
tronic payments associa
tion, found that phishing
scams have cost U.S. con
sumers about $500 million
so far.
Another study, released
last summer by the research
firm Gartner, estimated
the figure was close to
$2.4 billion over the previous
year.
Here are a few ways to
prevent getting phished:
>- It’s rare that an actual
financial institution will ask
you to verify your account
number online. If you get an
e-mail about confirming any
kind of financial information
or claiming your account
will expire, be skeptical.
>- When you click the
link, if the Web site you go to
is an IP address like
“202.21.23.1” instead of a
domain like “citibank.com,”
it is probably a phisher’s
site.
> If you notice a gram
matical error, it is almost
certainly a phisher. This
might be because many of
the con artists are from
overseas.
If you think you’ve been
duped by a phishing scam,
immediately call your credit
card and banking compa
nies. Check your account to
see if there are any charges
you didn’t approve, and
have the banks suspend
your account and send you a
new card with a new
account number.
Typically, your maximum
liability for fraudulent
purchases is only around
$50. But act quickly. You
usually only have 60 days to
inform the banks you’ve
been scammed.

SMITH:
Sonny’s
goes old
school
>- From Page 1
His interest in flight
became his business when
he created Sonny’s Air
Service and moved into the
old hangar at Ben Epps
airfield, which once was used
to train Navy pilots in World
War II.
Jon Brewer, a flight
instructor from Helen,
worked with Smith for three
years, and they have
remained friends.
Brewer said Sonny’s Air
Service has endured through
the years because of its
unique atmosphere.
“There are very few
airports like Ben Epps where
you step back in time,”
Brewer said.
Zack Massey, a junior
from Atlanta and flight
instructor at Sonny’s, said
the success of Smith’s air
service is because “this place
is real laid back.”
He said most student
pilots and pilots-in-training
at Sonny’s Air Service hang
around the airfield and talk
with Smith and the aircrew,
unlike other flight schools
that tend to be “imperson
al.”
“With other flight schools,
everything is rushed,”
Massey said. “They do every
thing they can to get your
check.”
Brewer said working for
Smith was “some of the
most enjoyable years” of his
life.
“The atmosphere is
unique,” Brewer said. “At
least 90 percent who fly at
this airport got some
training from Sonny’s.”
Athens may have
changed, but Smith and his
air service remain much the
same.
An old cigar box is the
cash register, and all the
accounting still is done by
hand.
“It’s ‘learn how to fly’
here,” Smith said.
