Athens’ rock quartet Now
It’s Overhead returns tonight
for a show at the 40 Watt
Club with The Killers and
Trachtenburg Family
Slideshow Players.
Since the March release of
its second album, “Fall Back
Open,” the group has been
tearing up the road on a
seven-week tour with a vari
ety of bands, including
R.E.M.
The album took nine
months to complete. Singer/
songwriter Andy LeMaster
spent most of the time alone
in the studio at midnight per
fecting arrangements.
“I did the recording at the
studio I own with a couple
other guys, so I did most of it
late at night so I didn’t hog
all the studio time,” LeMaster
said.
The overall theme in the
sounds of various songs is
important to LeMaster’s con
cept of the consistency on an
album. Deciding which songs
best convey the theme and fit
in sequencing determines the
final cut for which songs
appear on the album, he said.

“Most people don’t realize
how similar a lot of the songs
on their favorite albums are,
with repeated melodies and
time signatures and all that,”
he said. “The songs on this
album are cohesive produc
tion-wise, but are also com
pletely different.”
After deciding on
melodies, LeMaster’s lyrical
approach takes an erratic
route, utilizing mostly
stream-of-conscious writing
that keeps with the emotion
al tone of the composed
music, he said.
“If I attack a subject it
usually comes out feeling
extremely premeditated,”
LeMaster said. “With the best
songs I write, the melody
strikes me first. Then when
I’m writing for it, the less I
think at first, the better.
“I sit down and try to tap
into the core of what I want
to convey, and after that I
have about 30 percent of the
idea,” he said. “Then I embel
lish that into what become
the lyrics.”
Though he strives for lyrics
that don’t sound contrived,
LeMaster said the album is
anything but spontaneous.
His approach to recording
is methodical, thought out to
use the least amount of
tracks and get the feeling he
wants across, he said.
After LeMaster finished
the arrangements, drummer
Clay Leverett added his
parts. Then bassist Orenda
Fink and keyboardist Maria
Taylor of Azure Ray came in
to kick around ideas and add
their touches to the sound,
LeMaster said.
When Fink and Taylor
moved to Omaha, the band
had to find other musicians
for the tour.
“We’ve had a few different
Athens musicians play with
us,” LeMaster said.

The Georgia women’s vol
leyball team dives headlong
into the postseason today as
the SEC tournament begins
in Gainesville, Fla.
The Volley Dogs enter as
the No. 4 seed, facing
Alabama in the first round.
The increased importance of
this weekend’s games is not
lost on team members.
“You could really sense
(Tuesday’s) practice had a
new sense of energy and
focus about it, that this is
postseason now,” said head
coach Mary Buczek.
Tonight’s opening match
between Georgia and Ala
bama has deeper ramifica
tions than the conference
tournament. The winner of
tonight’s match may well get
an at-large bid to the NCAA
tournament.
“(A win over Alabama)
would definitely give us a
chance at the NCAA tourna
ment,” said junior Alexandra
Oquendo. “So I think it’s
very important to beat
Alabama. Huge.”
Georgia has only faced
Alabama once this season —
nearly two months ago — so
the game will almost be as if
the two teams have not faced
each other at all, Buczek
said.
The Volley Dogs also will
have a different look, as jun
ior Meghan Welch will return
from a sprained ankle.
“I think (the lineup
change) will only be a posi
tive effect,” Buczek said.
“(Freshman Martina Wag
ner) really proved herself out
there during that time, and I
think Meghan will be a force
for us in the back row.”
If Georgia beats Alabama,
it stands a chance of facing
top-seeded Florida in the
second round and the Dogs
look forward to a third sea
son meeting with the Gators.
“Regardless of the results
of a game against Florida, I
think it’s going to be good
that we play them again
because that would pump us
up and get us into the
rhythm again of playing hard
teams,” Oquendo said.
