POLICY: LGBTQA alliances to meet for cause

incidents, the complaint
says.
Chuck Cohen, the social
justice committee chair for
the Lambda Alliance, said
the lawsuit and President
Michael Adams’ pending
decision on the University’s
sexual orientation anti-dis
crimination policies are
being watched close
ly by the LGBT com
munity.
“If President
Adams vetoes (the
enforcement of the
sexual orientation
policies), that will
open the door for
other schools to get
rid of their anti-dis
crimination poli
cies,” Cohen said.
As for the lawsuit,
he said the plaintiffs
have overstepped
the boundaries of
free speech.
A member of the
reform Jewish move
ment, Cohen said
Malhotra, Sklar and
others misinterpret
the Bible.

“It’s one thing to stand up
and say ‘being homosexual is
wrong,’ like the preachers at
Tate do,” he said.
“But it is another to ver
bally attack people, use slurs
and follow them around.”
Members of LGBT organi
zations from around the
state, including Georgia
Tech’s Pride Alliance,
will meet Saturday at
Kennesaw State University
to discuss ways to further
their cause.
Cohen said the lawsuit
and Adams’ decision will be
on the agenda.
Adams will present the
University Council head with
his decision on the
University’s sexual orienta
tion anti-discrimination poli
cy by Friday.
BURDETTE: ‘When someone attacks you it hurts’

feel better about the possi
bility of going downtown on
a date or holding hands with
a female in public.
However, she said the
University’s lack of an
enforced anti-discrimination
policy protecting sexual ori
entation along with the
actions of conservative
groups like GuardDawg dis
turb her.
“Basically the University
doesn’t care if you discrimi
nate against gays,” she said.
Shawna Scott, a freshman
from Winter Springs, Fla.,
and Kitty’s “lesbian best
friend,” agreed the
University’s lack of protec
tion is hurtful.
Earlier this semester, an
offensive message about
lesbians was left on Scott’s
dorm door message board.
Kitty said she has not had
any confrontations with hall
mates about her sexual ori
entation.
“When someone attacks
you it hurts. I mean, I’m
human. I have feelings,”
Kitty said. “Sometimes I
have to think twice, like ‘Can
I put Lambda on my resume
as a leadership activity? Will
people hold that against me?
Am I risking my safety?”’
Informing people of her
sexual orientation has been a
mixed bag of reactions in
Kitty’s case. Even though
she came out to her
Lawrenceville community at
16, she still has not told her
father, who lives in North
Carolina.
When Facebook.com
opened to high school
students, she changed her
profile to downplay her
homosexuality so her half
siblings wouldn’t find out,
she said.
“My mom told me to be
careful about telling my dad
because he showed some
homophobic tendencies
when they were married,” she
said.
Overall, Kitty said she is
satisfied with her decision to
attend the University — with
support from the LGBT
Resource Center and good
friends — and looks forward
to graduating in the Classic
City.
SGA hosts
beer-filled
discussion
Tonight, the Student
Government Association is
sponsoring “Barq 4 Beer,
Food 4 Feedback” in an effort
to garner feedback from stu
dents.
Not real beer of course,
because the Student
Learning Center isn’t really a
place for drinking, but Barq’s
root beer and free food will be
in SLC room 101 at 4 p.m.
There also will be perform
ances from the Accidentals
and Noteworthy.
The event is intended to
gauge student opinion on
topics such as the plus/minus
grading system and the mora
torium on the building of fra
ternity and sorority houses.
Students are encouraged
to attend this event to voice
their concerns, meet their
student leaders and inform
themselves of campus issues,
according to a press release.
