Track and field athlete competes in world events
SPECIAL | The Red & Black
▲ Jenny Dahlgren, a junior track and field thrower, prac
tices her hammer throw. Dahlgren is rated No. 1 in the
country for her hammer throw and is preparing for the
NCAA Outdoor Championships June 7-10.
By ALLIE PETIT
For The Red & Black
Real talent knows no
boundaries. For junior Jenny
Dahlgren, her boundaries
extend well beyond the
United States.
This Argentina and Texas
native believes that her
globe-trotting background
has given her experiences
unusual to most Americans.
Yet despite her early jet
setting lifestyle, she still con
siders her childhood as “pret
ty average.”
At 6 feet tall, the track and
held shot-putter is anything
but average.
“I got to see more stuff
(growing up) having lived in
different places,” Dahlgren
said in a phone interview
from Sacramento, Calif.,
where she is representing
Georgia along with
nine of her teammates in the
NCAA Track and
Field Outdoor Champio
nships.
Dahlgren, who competes
in the discus, shotput and
hammer throw, currently
holds the NCAA, SEC,
Argentinean and South
American hammer throw
records at a distance of 236.3
feet, which she recently set
at the East Regional on May
27.
She is not only a notably
successful athlete in the
United States but also in
Argentina, for whom she
competed in the hammer
throw at the 2004 Olympic
Games.
“The Olympics were a big
learning experience for me —
one that I have that most
people don’t,” she said proud
ly-
Dahlgren often credits her
vast array of worldly experi
ences for her athletic success
es.
“I wouldn’t say (that I’m a
better competitor) just
because I’m an Olympian,”
she said.
“(It’s) probably just
because I have more experi
ence than them.”
Yet despite receiving such
accolades as the 2006 U.S.
Track and Field and Cross
Country Coaches
Association’s South District
Women’s Field Athlete of the
Year, Dahlgren still gets nerv
ous about competing in
events like this weekend’s
NCAA Championships.
“I’ve had three good meets
leading up to this meet, and
I’m favored to win it. But
that’s also the hardest place
to be,” she said.
“At this point, all your hard
training has been done. It’s
about staying rested and
focused.”
The women’s team is com
prised of seven representa
tives, including another
thrower, junior Krista
Woodward, who is a three
time SEC outdoor champion
in the javelin event. Senior
Patty Sylvester also will be
competing, but in three dif
ferent events — the long
jump, triple jump and high
jump.
The men’s team is repre
sented by three members,
including freshman Justin
Gaymon in the 400-meter
hurdles and junior David
Dickens in the 200-meter
dash.
Tennis and softball end for the summer
Softball
The Georgia softball team
(54-15) ended their 2006 sea
son on a sour note after los
ing 2-0 to Florida State (44-
28) in the final elimination
game of the NCAA Athens
Regional Tournament on
May 20.
The Lady Diamond Dogs
forced the make-or-break
game against the Seminoles
later that day after winning
the first game 3-1 behind
the strong arm of junior
starting pitcher Kasi Carroll
(30-7).
Carroll pitched both
games, but came up short in
the second game despite
allowing only one earned run
and five hits in each game.
For the tournament,
Carroll threw 35 innings
and allowed only two earned
runs.
“I just think we didn’t hit
the ball in that second
game,” said Georgia head
coach Lu Harris-Champer.
“Our players played with a
lot of heart, but we got out-
hit and had more errors in
that second game so it wasn’t
our game today.
“The exciting thing for
this team is that we only
lose two seniors.”
Men’s Tennis
The No. 1 Georgia men’s
tennis team (30-1) fell to No.
2 Pepperdine (36-2) in the
NCAA Championship match
by a score of 4-2 on May 23, in
Palo Alto, Calif.
“Pepperdine put forth a
championship effort,” said
Georgia head coach Manuel
Diaz.
“They beat us by one
match today. But I am still
very, very proud of our guys.
They, too, are true champi
ons.
“This doesn’t take any
thing away from what we
were able to accomplish this
year.”
Women’s Tennis
The No. 25 Georgia
women’s tennis team (13-10)
were stopped short of making
it to round 16 of the NCAA
Championship after losing 4-
2 to No. 13 Vanderbilt (23-4)
on May 13 in Stanford, Calif.
It was the final match for
seniors Caroline Basu and
Evgenia Subbotina.
