Burgess has experience for job
HALLS: Plan seeks to
renovate old dorms

University President
Michael Adams announced in
a press conference last
Thursday that Timothy E
Burgess has been appointed
as senior vice president for
finance and administration.
“I’m very excited,” said
Burgess. “This is a huge chal
lenge, but a huge vote of con
fidence as well.”
Burgess, the University’s
associate vice president and
budget director for the past
year, has 27 years of experi
ence in Georgia government.
A search committee
chaired by Provost Arnett
Mace interviewed seven
potential candidates for the
position, and Burgess was the
top recommendation.
“First and foremost, it
would be the experience that
Tim has in finance and budg
et,” said Mace.
Mace said Burgess’ numer
ous state government con
tacts and knowledge of the
University also influenced to

dation decision.
Burgess began his career in
the Office of Planning and
Budget in 1979 and was
appointed as state budget
director in 1995 by Governor
Zell Miller. He also has served
as the University’s Associate
Vice President for Finance
and Administration.
“This is a real opportunity
to pay the community back,”
said Burgess.
Burgess will replace Hank
Huckaby, who will retire June
30 after six years of service.
Huckaby retires with more
than 40 years of experience in
state government.
“The best advice I could
give is to keep a good group of
people around (him) and to
manage (his) time wisely,”
said Huckaby.

than the current rooms,
Schramski said.
Renovation for those two
residence halls should begin
next summer, he said.
“From a facilities stand
point, the costs are just too
high to renovate Payne Hall
(for student use),”
Schramski said.
According to the Univ
ersity, Payne Hall is too nar
row to create the larger
rooms required for housing.
The University’s Master
Plan also calls for the re
placement of the five dorms
in the Hill Community.
The renovations of
Rutherford and Mary
Lyndon Hall, building a
dorm on the Reed Quad
and ceasing the use of
Payne Hall as a residence
hall are Housing’s first pri
orities.

other services offered in the
new building.
Willie Banks, director of
student activities, said the
designers will take what they
hear from the various groups
and create preliminary draw
ings for their second visit at
the end of July or in early
August.
“You have to find out the
needs of a building before you
can design it,” said Sarah
Miller of MHTN Architects.
After that, designers will
continue work on the plans
before a final visit late sum
mer, after which final draw
ings should be completed.
The school needs the
designs finished before
groundbreaking in January
2007 on the 500-space parking
deck that will serve as Tate
IPs foundation.
“You can’t build a parking
deck without knowing what’s
going on top of it,” Banks
said.
From the day Tate II was
presented to students last
spring, the administration
wanted student input, char
acterized by the referendum
to use additional fees to build
it last April.
However, architects are
forced to do all the planning
this summer when only half
the regular student popula
tion is on campus, a fact that
“concerns” Student
Government Association
President Jamie Peper.
The University must work
around football season and
has had to endure a year-long
wait between students
approving the measure and
Regents approving the archi
tect for the project.
“We’d rather do this during
the academic year when more
students are here,” Mirecki
said.
