Dogs teach kids skills
DOOLEY: Working in retirement
With the 2006 football
season still months away,
the Georgia Bulldogs could
n’t wait that long to take the
field.
Tuesday University play
ers and coaches helped run
a football clinic at Camp
Sunshine, a camp for chil
dren with cancer, for their
summer community service.
The children at Camp
Sunshine participated in
various football-related
drills each day. The kids
were also excited with the
opportunity to get auto
graphs and have pictures
taken with the players and
coaches.
Camp Sunshine is a two-
week summer camp for chil
dren with cancer held each
year at Camp Twin Lakes in
Rutledge. The camp the

development.
“By teaching the kids at
Camp Sunshine about foot
ball, we all share the satis
faction of giving something
back to kids who’ve been
through a lot and still are
just normal kids who love
football, love being outside
and are working hard to
move beyond cancer,” head
coach Mark Richt said.
“At the end of the day,
we’re interested in building
great football players and
even greater men,” he said.
Women’s soccer
gets two transfers
The Georgia soccer team
signed two high-profile
transfers for next season.
Goalkeeper Courtney Cripps
transferred from Ohio State,
while forward Jessica Lenze
came from Vanderbilt. Both
players are from Georgia.
“We feel very fortunate to
have Courtney and Jessica
coming to the University of
Georgia,” said head coach
Patrick Baker. “Both are very
talented student-athletes
and will be wonderful addi
tions to our soccer program.

the “G” but with red and
black instead of green and
gold. Despite having the logo
first, the Packers have
tweaked its logo to resemble
the “straight-forward” look of
the Georgia “G.”
“There’s no design that
stands out like this because
the color combination of
black on white on red is prob
ably the most harmonious
colors in existence,” Dooley
said.
Dooley’s influence stretch
es beyond the reaches of
Sanford Stadium; he has
affected other football fields
as well.
“The biggest thing was the
real concern about sports
manship, such as this ‘look-
at-me’ attitude. We put in
some rules that have helped
to address that. We worked
hard, and I think we made a
lot of progress,” he said of his
time as chairman of the
NCAA Rules Committee.
Dooley was also instru
mental in bringing the state
of Georgia to the world stage,
assisting fellow Georgian
Billy Payne in getting the
1996 Summer Olympics to
Atlanta.
“I was there in Tokyo
because I wanted to be with
(Payne). Also, because if
Atlanta were to win it, we
wanted Athens to be a part of
it, and it was an easy sell,”
recalls Dooley.
Athens did host the soccer,
rhythmic gymnastics and vol
leyball events.
Despite his long and sto
ried career as a Hall of Fame
head coach, Dooley is quick
to put the emphasis on the
players.
“When all is said and done,
the championships are great,
the victories are great, (but)
the most rewarding part is
the players. You couldn’t get
a greater reward,” Dooley
said. “I think you don’t lessen
the great memories of cham
pionships but increase the
value of the individuals you
coach, and hopefully in some
way you influenced them in a
positive way.”
Although he retired last
July, Dooley has stayed
active, working in an on-cam
pus office — a gift from the
University.
His office, located in the
Rankin M. Smith Student-
Athlete Academic Center,
overlooks the football prac
tice fields and is filled with
happy memories. Pictures of
himself with Georgia greats
adorn his bookshelf, and an
old letterman jacket hangs on
the back of his door.
Despite his active involve
ment on campus, Dooley
enjoys retirement, preferring
to stay clear of current athlet
ic director Damon Evans.
“Damon needs his space. I
avoid any kind of perception
that I’m involved. I’m very
proud of him,” Dooley said of
his hand-picked successor.
The former coach spends
much of his time on the road,
making appearances, attend
ing book signings and speak
ing to small groups all over

the state.
“I’ve been as busy as I ever
have been in my life,” said
Dooley.
In his spare time, he visits
historical battlefields, and is
involved in the revitalization
of Gettysburg, Penn.
“There has been a big cap
ital campaign to restore
Gettysburg exactly to how it
was. There has been some big
progress,” he said.
With all the things Dooley
has done and achieved, he
has no regrets or leftover
goals.
“I had the great privilege
of doing everything that I
wanted to do as a coach. I did
it all,” he said proudly.
