WATER: Unexpected drought quick-acting

those Athens-Clarke County
has already imposed.
The restrictions, classified
as Level 1 under the state’s
drought response plan, ban
outdoor water use between 10
a.m. and 4 p.m., times when
water used outside would
most likely evaporate during
hot summer days.

WATER RESTRICTIONS
> Even-numbered addresses may
water on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Saturdays
> Odd-numbered addresses may
water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Sundays.
>- All outdoor landscape watering
is prohibited on Fridays.
> Spray irrigation is prohibited
between the hours of 10:00 a.m.
and 6:00 p.m.
>- Drip irrigation and/or hand
watering are not subject to the
hourly limits of the outdoor land
scape-watering schedule, but must
comply with the standard odd-even
day’s schedule.
>- New limitations will affect all out
door water use, such as washing
cars, filling swimming pools, hosing
off patios, etc.
These restrictions do not include
commercial and industrial use of
water critical to the conduct of busi
ness, such as commercial car
washes, tree farms and garden
supply nurseries.

BIKES: Campus lacks
transportation options
>- From Page 1
Services charging cyclists for
the lockers. “But if you’re
going to spend $1,000 for a
bike, you might want to store
it in something better than a
bike rack.”
There is another delay
holding up the bike lockers
other than money — aesthet
ics.
“(The lockers) are boxy
and rock-like,” Hale said.
“From an environmental
design standpoint, it’s not the
most attractive piece of prop
erty.”
She said she and the
University need to make sure
the look of these lockers does
n’t conflict with the
University sign policy that
regulates on-campus appear
ance.
“The University is doing
everything to reduce signage
and make campus as attrac
tive as possible,” she said.
“But they are supportive of
things that help alternative
transportation.”
Hale said she’s heard a lot
of people say the lack of prop
er storage is the reason more
people don’t ride bikes to
campus. But she thinks
there’s another reason too.
“It’s hard work,” she said
about riding a bike around
campus. “Sometimes you
need a shower afterward.”
And some students feel it’s
dangerous.
“Biking is also not an
option because to ride on
Broad (Street) is suicidal
because there is no bike
lane,” Sharon Muczynski, a
fourth-year student from San
Francisco, said in an e-mail.
“If (President) Adams wants
to make this a walking and
biking campus, he needs to
understand that biking and
walking to the campus must
be made a priority to the
town of Athens.”
But other cyclists, like
Steve Elliott-Gower, associ
ate director of the University
Honors Program and a mem
ber of the Alternative
Transportation Program and
Bike Athens, said they find
ways to get around it.
“If I’m going to Five Points
or somewhere, and I know a
city bus will be going at about
the same time, I hook my bike
on the front of the bus and
ride there,” he said.

tion is banned from

other forms of watering can
be used.
According to Adams, the
Physical Plant is using alter
native methods such as drip
irrigation, a water-conserving
method that sends the irriga
tion directly to the plant
bases.
“We’re trying to keep the
plants living opposed to keep
ing their appearance,” Adams
said. “The ban could become
more restrictive later in the
summer when we can only
water one day a week.”
State climatologist David
Stooksbury said University of
Georgia monitoring stations
recorded less than an inch of
rain from the mountain areas
just south of Gainesville to
the north coastal plain near
Dawson. And according to
www.georgiaweather.net,
Atlanta is running a 2.5 inch
rain deviation from normal.
“We are extremely dry,”
Stooksbury said. “This has
actually developed very
quickly.”
