Bulldogs continue efforts throughout summer
By JAMIE CWALINSKI
jcwalinsk@randb.com
Editor’s Note: Although most
students vacated campus for
the summer, Georgia’s sports
teams and personalities
remained busy.
In case you missed them,
here were some of the biggest
Bulldog sports stories from
the last few months.
Diamond Dogs
falter at finals
The Georgia baseball team
could not muster one last
heroic run in June’s College
World Series.
With one loss under their
belts in each of the double-
elimination initial two
rounds, the Diamond Dogs
won consecutive games
against both Florida State in
its opening regional and
South Carolina in a super-
regional to advance to the
World Series.
At the World Series, the
Dogs played two competitive
games but eventually fell vic
tim to a tough draw, losing 6-
4 to then top-ranked Rice in
the first round before being
eliminated by eventual cham
pion Oregon State 5-3.
“We just had to survive and
work so hard the last three
weeks leading into Omaha.
We were probably just a little
out of juice,” head coach
David Perno said after his
team’s elimination.
Mens’ tennis ends
strong season
A strong season for the
men’s tennis team reached an
unfulfilling conclusion at the
NCAA tournament in May.
Undefeated all season and
the top seed in the tourna
ment, the Bulldogs lost to
Pepperdine, whom they had
defeated earlier in the season,
in the finals, 4-2.
Junior John Isner, winner
of 29 straight singles contests
entering the national singles
tournament, fell in the second
round to Arizona’s Roger
Matalonga in two sets. He fin
ished the season ranked No.
2.
In the doubles tourna
ment, Georgia’s senior duo of
Colin Purcell and Strahinja
Bobusic reached the round of
16 before falling to Ryan
Rowe and Kevin Anderson of
Illinois, seeded third in the
nation, in three sets.
The Bulldogs could be in
for similar success on the
court next spring. In addition
to returning stars Isner and
Luis Flores, the team’s
recruiting class was ranked as
the best in the nation by the
Tennis Recruiting Network.
Basketball player
loses scholarship
Basketball coach Dennis
Felton announced in June
that the team would not be
renewing the scholarship of
forward Younes Idrissi for the
2006-2007 season.
Idrissi, who would have
been a junior, showed great
improvement in his second
season. The Casablanca,
Morocco, native started 10 of
30 games, averaging 6.5 points
and 3.5 rebounds per game
last season.
Idrissi’s sophomore cam
paign was highlighted by a
pair of 16-point efforts, his
career high, against Alabama
and Nevada.
“In order for our program
to continue with its growth
and development, we need
everyone to put forward an
honest effort in being respon
sible as student-athletes and
devoted to our mission for
excellence,” Felton said.
Richt receives a
significant raise
Two SEC football champi
onships and five bowl appear
ances in as many seasons
made football coach Mark
Richt worthy of a raise.
Richt signed an eight-year,
$16 million contract exten
sion on Aug. 1, keeping the
brain of Georgia’s recent foot
ball revival on the sidelines
through 2013.
As head coach, Richt has
gone 52-13 and in 2002 led the
Bulldogs to their first SEC
championship since 1982.
Richt’s team replicated the
feat in 2005. The deal bumps
Richt’s salary from $1.5 mil
lion annually to $2 million.
“It’s no different than what
I said my first day at Georgia.
My goal is to be at Georgia as
long as they’ll have me,” Richt
told AP

you play any position.”
With the difficult decision
to make and opening day not
too far away head coach
Mark Richt is feeling the hype
too.
He is sitting in on every
quarterback meeting and is
trying to judge everything to
make the decision, though it
is not easy.
“I’m getting frustrated
that I can’t have that little bit
more peace about what’s the
right thing to do right now,”
Richt said Saturday after the
team’s first scrimmage of the
season.
He also claims he will not
make the decision hastily to
please the masses.
“I’m usually a pretty
patient guy, and I’m going to
stay patient until I feel cer
tain and right now I’m not
certain,” he said.
And the quarterback can
didates feel that patience is
the key to this decision.
“Whatever he feels is right,
he’s going to do, and we all
have to respect that. If he
doesn’t feel he’s ready to
make a decision, nobody’s
going to rush him.” Stafford
said.
However, they also feel like
the attention surrounding
their position is simply some
thing with which to grow
accustomed.
“Sometimes it gets a little
overwhelming,” said Barnes, a
redshirt sophomore from
Baldwyn, Miss. “But you have
to step back and take it for
what it is — a competition.
It’s a big deal to the football
team.”
While Stafford, a true
freshman who wowed
fans with a touchdown on his
first throw at April’s
G-Day scrimmage, is a popu
lar choice to start, he is hum
bled to be under considera
tion for quarterback this
soon.
“I don’t know if I deserve it
because I haven’t done any
thing yet in college — high
school’s a whole different
story,” Stafford said.
“I’m really grateful for
having fans out there — you
can’t ask for anything more
than that. I don’t know how
legitimate it is right now.”
Nonetheless, while the
hype may be overwhelming,
the competition at quarter
back has helped improve the
quartet’s overall skills.
“We’re all learning from
each other and Coach Bobo
and Coach Richt, and I think
that we’re learning really
quick,” said Cox.
