Jbx and FX kick off the new
television season tonight
Pete Yorn experiments
with style on new disc
For those students who
got a headstart on their
homework over the Labor
Day weekend — or who like
to put it off until the last
minute — the TV may have
a few distractions in store
for you.
“House M.D.” returns on
Fox, tonight at 8, for its
third season. “House” stars
Hugh Laurie as the arrogant
but brilliant Dr. House, who,
along with his team of doc-

Godfrey graduated from the
University of Illinois with a
degree in psychology.
He discovered his
comedic talents while on his
university’s football team.
“All new members of the
varsity squad perform in a
talent show for the team
and staff,” Godfrey said.
For his performance
Godfrey impersonated his
coaches and teammates,
successfully stealing the
show.
Though putting an event
such as this together is a
lengthy process, Brown said
it’s an uplifting feeling to

And Godfrey is no excep

Union events and comedi
ans generally pack a bigger
punch than a middle-of-the
road band, said University
tors, which will premiere at
9 p.m. on Fox.
On FX at 10 p.m. comes
the return of the series,
“Nip/Tuck.” The show,
which is in its fourth season,
stars Dylan Walsh and
Julian McMahon as two
Miami plastic surgeons and
focuses on their patients
and their crazy lives. Last
season the surgeons aided
the victims of “the Carver.”

Union President Char-Lynn
Griego.
“Everyone loves to laugh,
but not everyone has the
same taste in music,” she
said.
University students
should prepare themselves
for Godfrey’s impressions,
one-liners and offbeat
remarks.
In one interview Godfrey
said, “I don’t care what you
do with your life, but I’m
going to make fun of it.”
Griego said the event
should provide students
with a much-needed laugh
and a nice break from the
stress that the beginning of
the semester tends to bring.
CD contains
artist's mellow
undertones
By MICHELLE FLOYD
mfloyd@randb.com
Since his debut in the
music world, Pete Yorn has
slipped under society’s radar.
His first full-length album,
2001’s
“Musicforthemorningafter,”
spawned hits like “For
Nancy” and “Life on a
Chain.”
The rest of the CD wasn’t
too bad either.
But his 2003 release “Day I
Forgot” did not achieve simi
lar success. His new album,
“Nightcrawler,” might be
overlooked, too.
“Nightcrawler” is much
different from his 2001 full-
length album, which was very
raw with a hidden rock ele
ment.
His new CD still has much
of that mellow Pete Yorn feel
ing, but Yorn also steps out
of his element at times.
Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
The opening track,
“Vampyre,” is almost too raw.
It’s like a lot of songs on
the album in which Yorn
PETE YORN

seems like he’s trying
too hard to sound like him
self.
If he would just let his
voice come naturally, as on
his first album, the music
would sound better.
The second tune, “For Us,”
would probably work better
as an opening track.
It has a good beat and
feels like a Pete Yorn album,
but his voice is shaky and
weird at times.
Even so, parts are some
how reminiscent of Coldplay.
Yorn kind of mumbled
with his nonchalant voice
on his first album, but
most of the lyrics could
still be understood — in “For
Us” and a few other tracks
it’s a little overdone and
annoying.
“Policies” is a track
that doesn’t really work for
Yorn, whose voice is too
altered and sounds airy and
almost electronic.
It could work in the right
mood, but it doesn’t really fit
with this song’s style.
“Splendid Isolation” is
another track that Yorn
doesn’t really pull off.
He might often sing in a
low voice, but this one is
much lower than his normal
tone.
But there are a few out-of-
Yorn’s-element songs that
are pretty successful for him.
“Alive” is about as dance-y
as you can get on a Pete Yorn
album. The lyrics that repeat,
such as “this day is alive,” are
catchy.
“Georgie Boy” might be
the most different on the
album. It sounds like there
are some computer elements,
although it’s not even close
to techno.
Somehow these new song
making methods work for
Yorn.
With 14 songs, there’s a lot
to listen to, so there’s going
to be some disappointment
with some listeners.
But avid Pete Yorn fans,
and perhaps even some lost
fans from years past, will
appreciate most of the songs.
