The Georgia volleyball
team (2-4) struggled over
the weekend in its first road
trip of the young season, los
ing three matches at the
two-day Georgia Tech
Invitational in Atlanta.
In each of the first two
games of the event, the
Bulldogs were one game
from victory, but could not
seal either match.
On Friday afternoon, the
Bulldogs fell to Georgia
State in five games.
After dropping the first
game, Georgia roared back
to dominate games two and
three, but the Panthers were
able to hold off elimination
in games four and five.

fought back to win the next
two games, but the Yellow
Jackets prevailed in the end.
The Bulldogs were unable
to bounce back in their
only match on Saturday, get
ting blanked by Northern
Iowa.
“I don’t think the results
reflected the way we played
this weekend because two of
the matches went
five games,” head coach
Steffi Legall said. “We still
look at these matches as
learning experiences and
growing experiences for our
young team.”
Senior outside hitter
Simona Speed was named to
the all-tournament team
after registering 28 kills and
30 digs in the three matches.

weekend’s University of

The No. 15 Georgia women’s soccer team
had its first stumble of the season over the
weekend, falling 2-0 to the No. 20 BYU
Cougars.
The Bulldogs (2-1) had several opportuni
ties to score in the game but could not seem
to finish. The team had 13 shots on the game
but put only three on goal.
All three were put on goal by freshman
Carrie Patterson in the second half.
“I felt like we played well, but the differ
ence was (BYU) was able to finish their
chances,” senior tri-captain Kelly Whitaker
said.
The Soccer Dogs and senior goalkeeper
Lauren Church allowed their first goal of the
season in the 36th minute.
After a BYU (3-0) corner kick, a collision
on an attempted header caused a deflection
and lead to an easy goal by Cougar sopho
more Alyssa Vander Veur.
Sophomore Katie Fellows secured the win

for the Cougars with a goal in the second half.
Putting the loss out of mind quickly will be
key for the Bulldogs in the next week. They
will travel to Charlottesville, Va., over the
weekend to play a tough Virginia team ranked
No. 6 in the country on Friday night and
George Mason on Sunday.
The road trip will be the first of the year for
the Bulldogs, and they know its importance
early in the season.
“(This) weekend is only going to be
tougher,” Whitaker said. “We’re becoming an
awesome team. We have to continue to take it
all in stride, and I think we will.”
Stafford’s
future
shows no
run game
Matthew Stafford scram
bled for 19 yards late in
Saturday’s game against
Western Kentucky.
The run to start Georgia’s
final drive put the ball in
Hilltoppers territory and
helped set up Stafford’s first
career touchdown pass.
The strong-armed fresh
man quarterback isn’t known
for his running ability, so
don’t expect to see him chug
ging down the field again.
“Don’t look for that any
more,” Stafford said. “I’m
probably going to get walked
down from behind.”
Stafford said his coaches
told him he did a good job,
but then had another mes
sage for him.
“(Quarterbacks) coach
(Mike) Bobo definitely allud
ed to that probably not hap
pening again, and I know it,”
Stafford said.
>- Senior defensive end
Quentin Moses earned plenty
of preseason awards before
the season started. He earned
his first for his play on the
field Monday.
The SEC named Moses its
defensive lineman of the
week. He had three total
tackles, one sack and three
quarterback hurries.
>- Fullback Jason Johnson
was among a group of players
at practice in no-contact jer
seys. He is out with an ankle
injury.
>- Freshman cornerback
Prince Miller practiced with
his right hand in a cast
Monday, but said it was a pre
cautionary measure. He
would not further explain the
injury, but said it was not
fractured.
>- South Carolina coach
Steve Spurrier said Sunday
that he expects starting quar
terback Blake Mitchell to
return to practice Tuesday.
He missed practice after cut
ting his right shin in the
Gamecocks’ first game
Thursday.
