Goodman sidelined for season
By PETER STEINBAUER

Wide receiver Demiko
Goodman will miss the
remainder of the season with
a torn anterior cruciate liga
ment.
The injury came as a shock
to head coach Mark Richt
after Goodman played well
even after the injury in
Saturday’s game.
“He played with energy,”
Richt said. “He was blocking
extremely well. He was run
ning good routes. He made
some nice plays.”
Richt said he wasn’t sure if
Goodman, a redshirt sopho
more, will make it back for
the beginning of next season.
Since Goodman has
already received a redshirt,
he would not retain the year
of eligibility if he sat out.
Goodman played in all 10
games this season, catching
13 passes for 187 yards.

Receiver Mario Raley is
out for the Auburn game
after he was knocked uncon
scious while catching a ball
over the middle Saturday.
All tests were negative and
Raley returned to Athens on
Sunday.
Receivers Mohamed
Massaquoi (hip, hamstring)
and A.J. Bryant (back) have
battled injury problems late
ly, as well. Richt said both
looked good at practice
Monday.
Brannan Southerland
wore a green non-contact jer
sey in practice due to irritat
ed neck muscles, but he said
he’ll be ready to play
Saturday.
“There’s no doubt about
that,” Southerland said.

adding held goals to his
gameday to — do list.
“(To kick field goals and
punt) even at the college
level is a lot to ask,” said Ely
— Kelso, an Athens native.
“I’ve known a lot of great
kickers that have tried and
it’s added a lot of pressure.”
Ely-Kelso said he’s proba
bly the fourth - best kicker on
the team behind injured
starter Brandon Coutu, Andy
Bailey and Ben Wilson.
None of that matters now,
as the mantle has been
passed to the Georgia punter
to right the Bulldogs’ sinking
special teams ship.
Since taking over for the
injured Coutu, Bailey has
missed three extra points
and three field goals —
including two in Saturday’s
loss.
Head coach Mark Richt
has confidence in Ely-Kelso,
who hasn’t kicked a field goal
in a game since high school.
“He has done a pretty nice
job,” Richt said. “He is not as
polished, but he does a pretty
good job of putting it through
there.”
Ely-Kelso said his biggest
challenge is starting the kick
before the ball arrives to the
holder, a form that is different
than a punt.
“I’ve been really close with
Coutu, and we’ve been work
ing on (technique) together,”
he said.
Brian Mimbs will be the
new holder for field goals and
extra points, taking over for
Ely-Kelso who was the holder
before.
As Ely-Kelso’s backup at
punter, Mimbs hasn’t seen
the field very often. Now he
has a major role to play.
“It’s the opportunity I’ve
been looking for,” Mimbs
said. “I don’t really feel any
pressure because it’s just like
being on the practice field.”
For Ely-Kelso, it will be a
contrast going from kicking
field goals for Clarke Central
High School to kicking for
Georgia five years later
against Auburn.
“Gordon’s a very calm guy,
and I know he can do it,”
Mimbs said.
Either way, Ely-Kelso sees
this change as his opportuni
ty to really show his worth to
a team that needs a spark.
“I’m trying to earn my
keep,” Ely-Kelso said.
“Everybody else runs around
and hits people. Maybe I can
kick a few footballs.”
Isner, Flores win tournament
By SAM STEINBERG

In a classic nail-biter,
Georgia’s John Isner and
Luis Flores defeated Middle
Tennessee’s Marco Born and
Andres Siljestrom to take
home the doubles champi
onship at the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association National
Indoor Championships.
The event is the premier
indoor tournament of the fall

season.
Isner and Flores won the
match 9-8 with a 7-4 come
back tiebreaker on the
courts at Ohio State.
Serve was held through
out the match, which lasted
a little more than an hour.
The Bulldogs were down
4-3 in the tiebreaker with
Middle Tennessee serving to
Isner.
Isner returned the serve
and closed in for a kill shot to
bring the match back to
even.
“John just played a
tremendous point to get the
match tied,” head coach
Manuel Diaz said in a phone
interview.
Georgia would never look
back after that point, as
Isner served out the match.
“We just stepped it
up in the tiebreaker when
we needed to,” said Isner,
a senior from Greensboro,
NC.
Throughout the match,
Flores was battling a sore
back from playing more than
seven hours of tennis the
previous day.
After taking aspirin and
warming up, Flores was able

match.
“Once the match started,
Luis really turned it on,”
Diaz said. “It was just a
tremendous show of
courage.”
The win was the 12th
straight for the Bulldog duo
and caps off an undefeated
fall season. The pair also won
the ITA All-American
Doubles Championship and
the Southern Intercollegiate
Doubles Championship.
“They are just playing at a
high level,” Diaz said.
Flores and Isner are
just the second pair to win
the All-American and
National Indoor Doubles
Championships in the same
season.
The duo was ranked No. 9
before the fall season and
should move up when new
rankings are released on Jan.
9 by the ITA.

game’s toughest confer

Nearly every coach
agreed that the conference
still remained the best, not
ing the physical style the
SEC became famous for and
that “any team could beat
any team on any given
night.”
“The SEC is still what
everyone wants it to be,” Ole
Miss head coach Carol Ross
said. “The ACC has had
some great years, but we
have done it on a routine
basis.”
All in all, Tennessee, LSU
and Georgia remain the
cream of the conference.
However, the SEC as a whole
has gotten stronger as the
rest of the conference has
gotten better.
Last season alone,
Vanderbilt, Florida and
Kentucky reached the
NCAA tournament and are
poised to go even further
this winter.
With South Carolina and
Auburn ready to turn the
corner as well, it is arguable
that there are no breathers
in this year’s conference
schedule.
“I see a minimum of six
teams that will be better
this year than they were last
year,” Georgia head coach
Andy Landers said. “That
equates to a better basket
ball conference, a more diffi
cult league. That could also
equal some losses for better
teams that they haven’t
encountered in past years.”
Some, such as Vanderbilt
head coach Melanie
Balcomb, believe that
reestablishing the league
starts with having a team
