TOP STORIES FROM AROUND
THE STATE, NATION AND WORLD
Parties get out the vote
WASHINGTON
Republicans and Democrats
pushed their get-out-the-vote
efforts to full throttle and
political luminaries hop-
scotched the nation on behalf
of candidates as some polls
showed Tuesday’s midterm
elections tightening.
President Bush jetted to
Florida Monday to campaign
for GOP candidates, but
Charlie Crist planned to duck
a rally with Bush in Pensacola
to campaign at the Lox
Around the Clock restaurant
in Delray Beach.
The White House was clear
ly irritated with the candi
date’s decision not to appear
with the president. Bush polit
ical strategist Karl Rove mock
ingly questioned what kind of
alternate rally Crist could put
together that would rival the
10,000-person crowd Bush was
expected to draw.
Former President Clinton
campaigned in upstate New
York on behalf of Democratic
House candidates before flying
to Virginia for Senate chal
lenger Jim Webb and Rhode
Island to be with Senate candi
date Sheldon Whitehouse.
Republicans and
Democrats sent thousands of

most contested races to work
phone banks and canvass
neighborhoods to turn out
voters.
Polls showed a mixed pic
ture of the electorate. A CNN
poll released Monday said 58
percent of likely voters would
cast their ballots for
Democrats running for
Congress and 38 percent for
Republicans. But a Pew sur
vey and a Washington Post-
ABC News poll showed the
gap narrowing to four to six
percentage points.
Up for grabs are 435 House
seats, 33 Senate seats, gover
norships in 36 states, and
thousands of state legislative
and local races. In 37 states,
voters also will determine the
fate of ballot initiatives,
including whether to ban gay
marriage, raise the minimum
wage, endorse expanded
embryonic stem cell research
and — in South Dakota —
impose the country’s most
stringent abortion restric
tions.

Ruling on
Saddam’s
appeal set
for January
BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq’s
appeals court is expected to
rule on Saddam Hussein’s
guilty verdict and death sen
tence by the middle of
January, the chief prosecutor
said Monday, setting in
motion a possible execution
by mid-February.
If the ruling is upheld, The
Associated Press has learned
that Iraq’s three-man presi
dential council is pledged to
allow Saddam’s hanging to
take place.
The execution must be
carried out within 30 days
of the appeals court’s deci
sion.
The surge in violence
expected immediately after
Sunday’s verdict did not
happen.
The Interior Ministry cred
ited a round-the-clock curfew
in Baghdad and two restive
Sunni provinces. Checkpoints
were also closed along Iraq’s
borders with Jordan and
Syria.
Authorities were gradually
lifting the restrictions, with
pedestrians allowed back on
the streets of Baghdad late
Monday afternoon.

Two Georgia Dems
defend House seats
SAVANNAH — Two
Democratic congressmen
and the Republicans seek
ing to oust them set out
Monday to fire up support
ers on the day before
midterm elections that
could cost GOP control of
the U.S. House.
The Republican Party
hopes to pick up two seats in
Georgia, and thus hold off
expected Democratic gains
nationally, by defeating Reps.
John Barrow of Savannah
and Jim Marshall of Macon
— conservative Democrats
representing largely GOP-
leaning districts.
Their opponents, both
former congressmen, are
familiar faces in Georgia
politics. Max Burns of
Sylvania faces a rematch
with Barrow two years after
the Democrat narrowly
defeated him; Mac Collins of
Jackson, who left the House
two years ago to run for the
Senate, came out of retire-
STATE
ment to challenge Marshall.
Burns sounded confident
Monday as he greeted about
50 supporters in Savannah
before flying to stops in
Statesboro, Milledgeville
and Augusta, all in the 12th
Congressional District.
Barrow has spent much of
the campaign presenting
himself as an independent
Democrat willing to buck his
own party on issues such as
immigration and the war in
Iraq. But he struck a much
more partisan tone Monday.
Flanked by about 30 sup
porters in downtown
Savannah, Barrow stood on
park bench and spoke
through a bullhorn to
encourage voters to seize
their chance to overturn the
GOP’s hold on Congress.

Alley dons bikini on Oprah
CHICAGO — Kirstie Alley
— who was once the “Fat
Actress” —donned a bikini
to show off her new shape
on “The Oprah Winfrey
Show,” fulfilling a pledge
she made about a year ago.
Winfrey said Alley, who is
5-foot-8, has lost 75 pounds,
after hitting a high of 220
pounds.
Her weight gain was
documented in various
unflattering paparazzi pho
tos.
To the sounds of the
Commodores’ “Brick
House,” Alley, 55, strutted
onto the stage in a maroon
bikini on Monday’s show.
NAMES & FACES
Wearing a dress for an
interview, Alley said she
never would have had the
courage to wear a bikini
onstage when she was 30,
despite being slender.
“I think women — I don’t
think we ever feel like we’re
good enough. We don’t feel
like we’re thin enough or
pretty enough or smart
enough or work hard
enough. And we are good
enough,” she said.
