‘retro’ sound not innovative
Platinum Weird’s
By CHUCK GRIFFIN ALBUM INFO
cgriffin@randb.com
Whether it entices you or
not, the extravagant taut fic
tional backstory that sur
rounds Platinum Weird is still
a pretty effective marketing
scheme.
The story dates to 1974
when Dave Stewart — a gui
tarist best known for his
work with Eurythmics in the
’80s — formed a pop rock
group called Platinum Weird
alongside female songwriter
and soul mate, Erin Grace
(vocals).
The band enjoyed a brief
period of popularity around
the London music scene until

Verdict: This band must have
forgotten that typical melodies,
unimaginative guitars and point
less harmonies don’t belong in
the new millennium.
they landed a record deal
with Elton John’s Rocket
Label.
As soon as recordings got
started, Grace mysteriously
disappeared, leaving a
severely depressed Stewart
with only a demo of the song,
“Will You Be Around.”
In reality, Platinum Weird
is the result of a 2004 collabo
ration between Stewart and
singer songwriter Kara
Dioguardi (vocals).
The story, along with the
fictional Erin Grace, is just
an elaborate hoax to sell
records.
With their new album,
“Make Believe,” the group
tries to create a ’70s style
sound, as the tracks are sup
posedly original recordings
from 1974.
But Platinum Weird isn’t
fooling anyone.
Ballads such as “Lonely
Eyes,” “Picture Perfect” and
“I Pray” add a retro vibe to
the album, but everything
else sounds closer to contem
porary indie-rock.
Dioguardi’s smoky, soulful
voice echoes the talents of
Annie Lennox (Eurythmics)
and keeps most of the tracks
from sounding too generic.
Dioguardi has no dynamic,
though. And to make things
even worse, her volume-
deprived vocals are guided by
listener-friendly guitar riffs
and unfaltering rhythms.
As for Stewart, he may
deserve the respect of a
successful record producer,
but his songwriting and
musical talents are a com
plete waste.
Stewart’s idea of a hit
song has always been in the
form of a one-track melody
guided by a one-track hook.
It should have ended with
Eurythmics.
Dioguardi’s methods
aren’t far off. As the brains
behind many of today’s pop
artists, she has written sim
ple-minded hit songs for
Christina Aguilera, Jessica
Simpson, Sean Paul, The
Pussycat Dolls and many
more.
Platinum Weird encom
passes nothing about the
1970s.
Rock was still nascent
back then, and artists such
as Fleetwood Mac, Van
Morrison, Heart and Steely
Dan had much more than
just a decent melody.
If anything, Platinum
Weird would have been an
insult to such a progressive
decade.
Yoculan’s new book reflects on rise of Gym Dogs
By MEGAN HARRISON
mharrison@randb.com
“Perfect 10” has been five
years in the making, accord
ing to Suzanne Yoculan.
All in all, it was actually a
23-year-long process, but the
Georgia gymnastics coach’s
book itself took only five.
“Perfect 10”, which is co
authored by Yoculan and Bill
Donaldson, is the chronology
of the Georgia gymnastics
program since Yoculan took
over in 1983 and how she was
able to transform the small
sports team into seven-time
National Champions.
Yoculan said she knew that
Georgia was football country
when she accepted the job
and walked onto campus as a
Yankee wearing a Penn State
cap.
But in the book she says
this is what she always want
ed to do.
“I knew that I wanted to
teach gymnastics,” Yoculan
said, adding that even in col
lege she knew she wanted to
coach.
“Perfect 10” is not as much
about the philosophy of
coaching, as it is about how
Yoculan and the Gym Dogs
rose from a time when only
200 people came to meets to
today, when tickets are hard
to come by.
Yoculan also documents
the sport’s “culture the way it
was,” also recalling a time
when the Gym Dogs would
pack 15 people in a van and
travel to meets.
“We were never given any
thing,” she said, adding that
the support the Gym Dogs
receive has been earned over
the years.
At one point, Yoculan,
swimming coach Jack
Bauerle and women’s basket
ball coach Andy Landers
would all share a room for
recruiting.
But the book is more than
just about Yoculan’s ability to
make the Gym Dogs one of
the top collegiate gymnastics
programs in the nation — it
also tells about the obstacles
she faced in the elevation of
her team.
Namely, Yoculan discusses
issues such as the idea gym
nasts shouldn’t compete past
the age of 18, team chemistry
and the importance of
remembering that it is still
college athletics at the end of
the day and how important
education is.
Though Yoculan has had to
deal with very few eating dis
orders in her career, she
devotes an entire chapter of
the book to the problem.
Yoculan said that there is a
high level of OCD in high-level
gymnastics, but there are not
as many eating disorders
because they have to keep up
their energy.
However, Yoculan also
knows that there is a problem
with eating disorders around
the world and showed that
people can be influenced by
it.
In another part of the
book, the discussion of gen
der equality comes in to show
that even into the 1990s, the
equality in sports had not
really happened because both
Yoculan and Landers had to
renegotiate contracts for fair
ness.
“Perfect 10” is more than
just the timeline of events for
Yoculan at the University. The
book serves as a way for the
