‘Jesus’ comes to Athens
via hit Broadway play
By WHITNEY KESSLER

Jesus is coming to town.
That is, “Jesus Christ
Superstar,” the original Tim
Rice and Andrew Lloyd
Webber production, is com
ing to the Classic Center.
The production is a
“dramatized version” of the
last seven days in the life of
Jesus Christ.
Opening in 1971 in New
York City, the show quickly
became a hit and has since
circled the globe.
The show also was made
into a movie, and
International Movie Data
Base ranks it as one of the
top historical movies of all
time.
Leigh Smith, theater
director at the Classic
Center, said the show hasn’t
ever come to Athens. She
said she has seen the work of
the producers and director
involved in Troika
Entertainment, the New York
company producing the
show, and she is very excited
about them coming.
“The general reaction has
been enthusiasm that this
show is coming. It’s a true
Broadway success, with
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
music, and being able to offer

it straight out of New York is
very exciting,” Smith said.
The title role is played by
Ted Neeley, who starred in
the film that was created in
the early 1970s right around
the same time as “Fiddler on
the Roof” and the original
“Rollerball.”
Judas is played by Corey
Glover, lead singer of the
rock band Living Colour.
Smith said the rendition
of the story is powerful
because it is a different
perspective on an old tale.
The producers and direc
tor are extremely detail-ori
ented, and this attention to
detail is what will make this
show a success in Athens,
Smith said.
“Though you know the
story of Jesus, the music and
setting make this such a
powerful story,” she said. “It’s
very moving.”
The music was composed
by the world-famous Andrew
Lloyd Webber, who penned
the music for “The Phantom

of the Opera” and “Cats.”
Many will recognize the
main theme, “Superstar,”
and the hit “I Don’t Know
How to Love Him,” said
Smith.
“It is a powerful rendition
in a modern perspective on
Jesus’ life — this will be a
show that you do not quickly
forget,” she said.
Christmas arrives early with
Junior League Marketplace
By MICHELLE FLOYD

It’s beginning to look a lot
like that time of year when it
seems too early to have
Christmas music playing on
the radio and seeing holiday
decorations filling up racks in
the grocery store.
But like it or not,
Christmas is indeed
approaching.
And this weekend, the
Junior League of Athens is
presenting a Holiday
Marketplace at the Classic
Center to allow everyone to
begin their holiday shopping.
“We invite local and
regional merchants to sell
their items,” said Tiffany
Hines, chair of this year’s
marketplace.
This is the third year of
the event, which has always
been held at the Classic
Center.
“It’s one of the few loca
tions in Athens that caters to
this,” Hines said.
This year the marketplace
features more than 75 mer
chants, including Create-A-
Keepsake, Cross Wood
Products, Discovery Toys,
Homemade Gourmet,
Kazuria Jewelry, Mary Kay,
Southern Living at Home
and Usborne Books at Home,
among others.
The marketplace includes
vendors who will sell such
items as art, jewelry, acces
sories, clothing and toys.
Hines said most mer
chants should offer various
forms of payment, like cash,
check and major credit cards.
She also said the prices of
the items vary by merchant,
but a lot of items range from
$5 to $100.
“Most of the items are
cash and carry,” she said.
The marketplace also will
feature events other than
shopping each day.
Friday is the preview
shopping day that begins at 4
p.m., but attendees can still
buy some items, although
Hines said most visitors will
wait.
The Classic City Jazz
Band, which includes several
trombones, trumpets, saxo
phones and a grand piano,
will start up around 7 p.m.
and play throughout the
night.
Tickets are $25 after 7
p.m. and will include a
catered dinner from
Carrabba’s Italian Grill,
dessert wine tasting and a
cash bar.
Saturday’s events run
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and
include a mini food court
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with
lunch from Food works.
Jittery Joe’s also will provide
its drinks throughout the day
Saturday and Sunday.
