Republicans came into
power at the national level 12
years ago, while the GOP has
only taken the General
Assembly in the last four
years.
“The state Republicans
haven’t been in power long-
enough to alienate their sup
porters,” Bullock said.
He also said state
Democrats have yet to
become accustomed to their
minority position.
“They haven’t set down
and had a serious soul-
searching about what they
can do to turn things
around.”
Bill Cowsert, R-Athens,
who beat state Rep. Jane
Kidd, D-Athens, for state sen
ate Tuesday, said he doesn’t
believe this year’s elections
saw a change in state politics
but “more of the same.”
“It happened four years
ago and continued two years
ago. Only a few open seats
changed hands this year,” he
said.
Payton Bradford,
spokesman for the Young
Democrats, said he believes a

room for everyone to see,”
Green said.
“I received many death
threats (in 1971) and had to
live in a different place every
few days,” he said
Because of the harassment
and financial difficulties,
Green left the University in
1972.
Over the years, Green has
worked for various gay
activist groups, and currently
volunteers with an AIDS sup
changing demographic is
responsible for the increased
Republican presence at the
state level, pointing to a large
influx of people to the metro
Atlanta area.
He also said many of the
state’s self-described “inde
pendent voters” leaned
Democrat this past election
cycle.
On the national level,
Bradford said Americans are
tired of Bush’s foreign policy
and the Republican’s “culture
of corruption.”
Jeff Emanuel, spokesman
for the College Republicans,
offered a different view.
On the national stage,
Emanuel said Republicans
boasted a conservative ideol
ogy during their campaigns
but “lost sight of those val
ues” and resembled the
Democratic party.
“You had Democrats and
Democrat-like,” Emanuel
said. “You have to govern on
your values, or you will be
unceremoniously thrown out
of office as we saw last night.”
Emanuel said he attributes
Republicans picking up top
state offices to a lack of com
petition from Democrats.
port group in Panama City.
“We were hated publicly,”
Green said. “The word ‘gay’
wasn’t even spoken during
that time. I’m not sure what
it has cost me, but I have
peace of mind and happi
ness.”
Shutt said there is still
room for more progress.
“Although significant steps
have been taken, I think it’s
interesting how we are still
having some of the same
arguments for and against
rights 35 years later.”
Junk mail
irks less
than spam
You open up your e-
mail inbox and are inun
dated with spam that
offers everything from
inkjet cartridges to
“investment opportuni
ties” that are too good to
be true.
You open your mailbox
at home to find more
unsolicited ads — every
thing from pizza coupons
to credit card offers.
Ever wonder which is
more annoying?
According to a new
study by a researcher in
the Grady College of
Journalism and Mass
Communication, most
people find spam more
intrusive and irritating
than direct mail solicita
tion.
Mariko Morimoto, an
assistant professor of
advertising at the
University, co-authored
the study with University
of Miami professor Susan
Chang. The researchers
randomly assigned 119
college students to a sur
vey that asked about
either spam or direct mail.
Results from a focus
group study conducted by
Morimoto and Chang
found that people find
spam more intrusive than
direct mail because it
makes it harder to get to
legitimate and wanted
messages. Discarding
direct mail, on the other
hand, wasn’t perceived as
time - consuming.
And while spam often
contains adult content or
other inappropriate mate
rial, direct mail pieces
often contain potentially
useful items, such as sales
promotions and easy-to-
use coupons. E-mailed
coupons must be printed,
which is an extra step that
consumers would rather
not have to take.
