BANNERS: HEROS raises awareness without donations
>- From Page 1A
UGA HEROS is a philan
thropic organization aimed
at helping children in
Georgia infected or affected
by AIDS/HIV.
The campus organization
is a division of Hearts
Everywhere Reaching Out
for Children, Inc.
Bennett said his decision
was not influenced by the
type of organization involved.
“I fully support UGA
HEROs,” he said.
Sororities, fraternities,
local businesses and more
than 13 athletic teams made
banners decorated with rain
bow-colored hands in sup
port of the organization,
Scott said.
In total, more than 9,000
hands were painted on the
banners.
“By getting their hand
prints, they didn’t have to
give any money, but they
were able to still give their
support to UGA HEROs and
kids affected by AIDS in
Georgia,” Scott said.
Harry Bissett’s New
Orleans Cafe and Oyster Bar
downtown had a banner
placed on its front door.
“I think it’s a good cause,
so I didn’t have a problem,”
said Neil Smith, the restau
rant’s general manager.
The campaign’s goal was
to raise awareness through
the signs covering downtown
and campus.
“It’s nice to have a cam
paign and to not directly ask
for money,” said Emma
Allmond, a junior from
Peachtree City and chairper
son of public relations and
marketing committee.
One of the goals of UGA
HEROs is to provide the chil
dren with positive experi
ences, she said.
On Nov. 18, the organiza
tion will host a HERO
Olympics.
“We put on special events
and have fun activities where
they can forget they take 20-
plus pills a day,” Scott said.
They also hope to build
strong relationships between
the philanthropists and chil
dren.
“People who put time and
money in the organization
get to spend that one-on-one
time,” said Bonnie Williams,
a junior from Marietta and
public relations and market
ing assistant for the group.
Only people who donate
money are invited to the
Olympics, after volunteers
outnumbered kids last year,
she said.
This year, more than 1,000
University students pledged
to be philanthropists by rais
ing $100 or more, Allmond
said.
