Volley Dogs set for final matches
Season ends with SEC games
By LAWRENCE CONNEFF
lconneff@randb.com
The banged-up Georgia
Volley Dogs head into their
final pair of home SEC
matches this weekend with
redemption on their minds.
The last time they faced
Tennessee and Kentucky in
the same weekend, they
failed to take even a game
from their Eastern Division
rivals in a couple of 3-0 deci
sions.
“Knowing that they beat
us on their home courts, and
beat us solidly, I know that
we’re going to want to equal
the score here,” head coach
Steffi Legall said.
But in order to do so, the
Bulldogs (6-20, 2-14 SEC)
will have to overcome a num
ber of nagging injuries that
have limited the team’s abili
ty to adequately prepare in
practice this week.
Starters Brooke Peugh
and Renee Johnson are suf
fering through minor labrum
tears in their shoulders,
which prevent them from
swinging in practice, Legall
said.
Sophomore outside hitter
Maria Taylor, another starter,
has a stress reaction in her
shins and cannot jump in
practice.
Legall and the coaches
want to limit her jumping to
actual match play, so as not
to let the injury develop into
a stress fracture.
“It’s a little bit more than
shin splints, and with the

pounding and the amount of
swings and jumps she takes,
we just want to be cautious,”
Legall said.
Reserve outside hitter
Alexis Morgan also has been
slowed since having a corti
sone shot in her back for a
herniated disk, only adding
to the team’s frustrations.
“We’re managing,” Legall
said. “It’s what every team
goes through at one point or
another during the season.”
“We’re very limited in
what we can do in practice,
so it’s affected us, but we cer
tainly don’t want to use that
as an excuse.”
Legall said that everyone
will play in this weekend’s
matches against Tennessee
and Kentucky, a tribute to
both their resilience and the
team’s lack of depth.
“They know that we rely
on them to be out there and
play their hardest. They’re
playing through that pain
because they know we don’t
have a lot of other options,”
she added.
On Friday night, Georgia
will look for its first win over
the Lady Vols since 2003 and
hopes to end a three-match
losing streak to the Wildcats
on Sunday.

‘Stella’ a different, but
hilarious comedy DVD
By RUSTY BAILEY
rbailey@randb.com
Comedy trio Stella, featur
ing Michael Ian Black,
Michael Showalter and David
Wain, performed in night
clubs for eight years before
its big break with its own
show on Comedy Central.
The series was sadly cut
short, but the first (and only)
season was released with a
couple of worthwhile extras.
“Stella” follows three
roommates and their absurd
antics. They write a book,
start their own individual cof
fee shops and even grow
crops in their apartment.
The ridiculous plots are an
acquired taste — an alterna
tive comedy that you can’t
quite get anywhere else —
but that’s not necessarily a
bad thing.
Their unique humor brings
you into a world devoid of
logic. Every situation is taken
so seriously, it’s hilarious.
Another point on the
“acquired taste”: some of
their jokes are long, played
out and can get slightly
annoying.
The guys will start arguing
and they are all talking at
once, saying entirely different
things, and while the first few
seconds are funny, after they
go on for a minute, you’re
just waiting for them to shut
up.
That one complaint aside,
this DVD set has few extras,
but they are excellent as they
focus more on quality than
quantity.
STELLA DVD
Grade: B-
Verdict: An alternate route to laugh
ter that includes some worthwhile
extras.
The first disc offers “The
History of Stella,” a 45-
minute film documenting
from when they met at NYU,
to their break into television.
In this you can see some
of Stella’s stand-up work,
and some clips from their
earlier shorts. It is an excep
tionally insightful documen
tary, allowing Black,
Showalter and Wain to be
down-to-earth for once and
reminisce about the good
times — and occasionally the
bad times.
The second disc includes
their “Comedy Central
Presents” 30-minute live per
formance, deleted scenes and
a blooper reel.
The live show is funny and
definitely allows the audience
to see where the idea for
“Stella” originated.
Class to race own cardboard creations
By WHITNEY KESSLER
wkessler@randb.com
Buoyancy, Archimedes
and displacement are three
words that just might rock
the boat if said in a casual
conversation, but in a class
about boat building they fit
right into the jargon.
Wendy Newton, an early
childhood education major
from Chattanooga, Tenn.,
said she signed up for the
“Creative Activities for
Teachers” class after hearing
about it from enthusiastic
friends.
“They told me about some
of the activities they had
done and it sounded like a
fun way to create project
ideas that I can take and
adapt for my own classroom
in the future,” Newton said.
The class consists of a
series of projects where the
students spend most of their
time in groups constructing.
Newton said two of the
projects she thought were
interesting were when they
built models of various types
of shelters such as a castle or
a grass hut.
The other project she
mentioned liking was when
they were told to use one
sheet of paper and glue to
build a structure that would
hold over a hundred pounds.
“All the projects we have
done so far have been really
challenging and fun,” she
said. “The overall thing we
are supposed to get out of it,

as with all of our projects, is
to realize that there are
many different ways to teach
concepts that can really get
people involved and excited.”
Before the construction
began, the class was given
some guidelines and some
instruction. Newton said the
rules are that the teams
must build a boat that can
carry at least one group
member.
They also must design the
propulsion device in order to
get across the pool. The only
supplies they have to build
with are cardboard, duct
tape and plastic wrap.
Newton said her group
went straight to the books to
find a design for the hull that
would help them win.
After drawing it out, the
team created a model ver
sion of their boat to test
their design.
She said they finished up
by using their piece of duct
tape to secure the cardboard
in place.
“At first I was a little hesi
tant that we would actually
be able to pull it off,” she
said. “It seemed a little far
fetched that we would be
able to build a boat out of
cardboard. But once we
started our design process, I
got really into it and excited
about seeing our design in
action.”
She said everyone has
been hush-hush about their
designs and her team has no
idea what the other teams
have come up with.
Everything will be decided
on the day of the race
Thursday during the class
period from 12:30-1:45 p.m.
at the Ramsey Center.
It is open to anyone who
would like to watch the com
petitors race.
“We have all worked very
hard on creating our designs
and the actual building
process and we would love to
have people come watch the
race and support us,”
Newton said.

Same location, new name,
lots of vintage clothing
By CHRISTINA GRAFF
cgraff@randb.com
Some things realiy do get
better with age.
Especially for those in the
business of vintage clothing
like Janice Bryan.
Bryan, who has been sell
ing vintage clothing for nine
years, recently revamped
and renamed the clothing
store previously known as
Dick and Jane.
Located on Clayton Street
next to the Last Resort, the
shop now known as Minx is a
treasure chest brimming
with everything from clutch-
style purses to leather cow
boy boots to fur coats.
Bryan discovered the
name “minx” — which refers
to a saucy, sexy girl — in the
novel “Confederacy of
Dunces” and deemed it a
perfect fit for her boutique.
Glass showcases display
vintage necklaces, earrings,
bracelets and pins of every
style and even antique metal
belt buckles.
Numerous clothing racks
house shirts, pants, jackets,
skirts and dresses to suit
every taste.
Some racks are full of flir
ty, beaded cocktail dresses
styled in the ’50s, ’60s and
’70s, while others hold a wide
array of more contemporary
designs by Lily Pulitzer.
Anyone in search of the
perfect accessory may find
just what they’re looking for
amidst the countless vintage
hats, scarves and belts.
Bryan searches for items
for her store in states as far
as Virginia, Pennsylvania,
Kentucky, Louisiana and
Tennessee.
“Vintage” entails that
items are at least 20 years of
age, but Bryan is not one to
discriminate.
“I just get what I like and
hope others like it too,” she
said.
This fall, she is partial to
beaded sweaters and short
jackets from the ’50s and
describes her style as “clas
sic but whimsical.”
