INSTRUCTOR:
Pilot school

he loves.
“When you teach flying you
get better at it, just like any
thing else,” Sanchez said. “I
used to work in a cube. It’s a
lot cooler to be out flying
around.”
Instruction at Firefly
begins with ground school,
when an instructor goes over
the basics of flying and the
student practices with a
flight simulator. Then the stu
dent flies the plane as the
instructor “shadows,” holding
his hands over the controls
and giving step-by-step
instructions.
“The first time up is like
parents taking kids to drive in
a parking lot and taking a
couple of turns,” Sanchez
said.
Many students are hooked
after just one flight.
One of Sanchez’s newer
students, Chris Cochran, a
senior from Athens majoring
in political science, has been
interested in aviation since
childhood and hopes to work
as an air traffic controller.
Flying made him more
confident about his career
choice.
“My first flight was amaz
ing,” Cochran said. “I thought
I would be nervous, but I was
calm and had a blast. After
my flight, I knew this is what
I want to do.”
Students at Firefly
Aviation include a doctor who
owns his own plane to several
University students. Most fly
as a hobby, rather than as
preparation for a career as a
pilot.
Hunter Thompson, a sen
ior from Fortsmith, Ark.,
majoring in finance, learned
to fly a plane before he was
old enough to drive a car. He
earned his pilot’s license in
2005 and flies at Firefly
Aviation in preparation for a
business career.
“It’s something I can rely
on to make my world a little
smaller as far as business
goes,” Cochran said.
“It makes traveling more
convenient.”
Flying has certainly
opened doors for Sanchez as
well. Upon graduation, he
hopes to become a full-time
pilot.
One airline he is consider
ing working for is based on
the island of San Juan, and
Sanchez’s job would entail
“island hopping” throughout
the Caribbean.
Still, Sanchez insists that
being a pilot is not as easy as
it seems.
“There are a lot of miscon
ceptions about pilots,”
Sanchez said.
“It’s a tough job because
you have to concentrate all
day long.”

CAUGHT: Journalist deceives Duke, Ivy League

“It broke every rule in the
book,” he said. “It definitely
raised a warning flag.”
Hazinski then did a little
research of his own. He
searched for Gilbert on the
CBS News Web site and
found no results.
At Hazinski’s urging,
University journalism stu
dents called CBS News to
determine Gilbert’s employ
ment status.
They said he had done
stringer work for them in the
past but was not employed
by CBS, Hazinski said.
When Gilbert was con
fronted, he admitted to
misrepresenting his creden
tials.
Gilbert’s self-proclaimed
title came with a price as
well.
He charged a flat fee of
$1,000 for appearances,
Berelowitz said.
Gilbert refused to negoti
ate the price, Berelowitz
said, because he said he
“would have to make a deal
for the other groups he
spoke with.”
He has not collected his
fee from Dawgs for Israel.
Despite the controversy,
Hazinski said he still wanted
Gilbert to make his speech.
“Part of the point of col
lege is that we want everyone
to speak,” he said.
However, Dawgs for Israel
decided to cancel the event
because it would take away
from the Israeli message and
put the focus on media
manipulation instead,
Berelowitz said.
“We are all really angry,”

An officer searching the

Boone said.
The officer received

Two University students

Three University stu

after an officer watched
them fire objects from sling

If convicted of this felony
charge, the students could
