Volunteering can be easy

Volunteering is a triple
threat — it feels good, it’s
fun and of course ... it pumps
up any resume.
At a large school like the
University, there are plenty
of opportunities to get
involved.
“It's so easy at UGA,” said
Jennifer Rhea, a junior from
Kennesaw. “They set up all
the programs — all we really
have to do is volunteer our
time.”
Most organizations on
campus offer volunteer
opportunities for their mem
bers. Sororities and fraterni
ties usually have a philan
thropy requirement for
members and set up philan
thropy efforts to help their
members get involved.
Other organizations are
devoted solely to service —
Gamma Sigma Sigma and
Alpha Phi Omega are two
service organizations on
campus.
Even the individual col
leges have volunteer pro
grams. For example, Grady
College supports the Athens
Area Homeless Shelter by
raising money and cooking
dinners once a month.
Another way to find vol
unteer opportunities is to
identify a particular interest
that a student might have.
The campus organiza
tions Web site (http://stuorg-
webdb.stuact.uga.edu/orglist
.php) is a resource for find
ing organizations that fit a
student’s interests.
If a student is interested
in helping children, the
H.E.R.O. For Children is an
organization that strives to
improve the quality of life of
childhood AIDS victims.
Dance Marathon is anoth
er University-wide organiza
tion which raises money to
help raise money and aware
ness of childhood diseases.
Other organizations focus
on helping the Athens com
munity. The Thomas Lay
Center After School program
which runs through the
Honors Program, pairs col
lege students with under
privileged children in the
community to provide a
structured after school set
ting.
The Athens Area Humane
Society is also an excellent
place to volunteer if a stu
dent likes animals. The
Humane Society is always
looking for volunteers to
walk the dogs or just hold
and pet the cats.
The above examples are
just a few of the ways to get
involved on campus and in
the community — go out
and explore for more!
