SPORTS The Red & Black | Thursday, November 16, 2006 | 5A Volley Dogs lose initial lead to S.C. Gamecocks Receiver recovers from gameday injury TOM O’CONNOR | The Red s, Black A Georgia running back Kregg Lumpkin (16), who rushed for 109 yards on 21 carries in Saturday’s 37-15 victory over Auburn, suffered a sprained ankle late in the game. By LAWRENCE CONNEFF lconneff@randb.com A squandered lead in the opening game set the tone for the match as the Georgia volleyball team fell at South Carolina by a score of 3-0. The Volley Dogs (6-23, 2-17 SEC) lost their eighth straight match in the process, as the Gamecocks (15-15, 8- 11) completed the season sweep. Georgia jumped out to an early lead in the first game, in which they led by as many as five points. But despite holding a 28- 27 advantage, they let the game slip through their fin gertips by allowing South Carolina to close out the game on three straight points. Shonda Cole, the SEC’s leader in kills per game, did not disappoint in the early going as she tallied 12 kills in the opening game alone. Game two was not as high ly contested, with the Bulldogs holding their only VOLLEYBALL Women’s Volleyball (6-23, 2-17 SEC) Loss to South Carolina 3-0 (30-28, 30-20, 30-18) Next match: AT Alabama 1:30 p.m., Sunday lead at 1-0. South Carolina surged ahead and never looked back on their way to a 30-20 victory. The Gamecocks pulled away early on in the deciding game as well, with their largest lead coming at the final 30-18 mark. Cole finished with a match-high 27 kills, while Maria Taylor, second in the league in kills per game, led the Bulldogs with 11. Taylor also was the leader on the defensive end with a team-high nine digs, which left her one short of recording her 10th double-double of the season. The Volley Dogs will com plete conference play on Sunday at Alabama. By MATTHEW BORENSTEIN mborenste@randb.com Mario Raley’s day began well at Kentucky two weeks ago. The senior caught a touchdown at the end of the first quarter and had three catches for 38 yards. He was on his way to hav ing the best game of his career. Then after making his third reception over the mid dle, he got hit hard. The hit by two Kentucky defenders knocked the ball loose and sent Raley to the ground, where he laid for sev eral minutes before leaving the field on a stretcher. He spent the night in a Lexington, Ky., hospital. A week and a half later, he is fine, he said Wednesday, speaking with reporters for the first time since the game. He said he hopes to play against Georgia Tech a week from Saturday, but first must pass a conditioning test from team athletic trainer Ron Courson. His memory after the hit, which silenced the Commonwealth Stadium crowd, is hazy, but he said he remembers everything before being hit, including the touchdown which gave Georgia an early lead. Even after the hit, he wanted to get back in the game, although the team medical staff would not allow it. “I felt like I could get up,” Raley said. “But they felt like it was best I didn’t get up ... Of course I was mad because I wanted to finish the game.” In the week after the game, he said he suffered some headaches, but they are no longer a problem. A healthy Raley could be big for the Georgia offense, which has several receivers out with season ending injuries and several more that have played through injuries for most of the year. He has five catches for 66 yards and two scores this season. The two touchdowns tie him for most receiving touchdowns on the team. Running back battling injuries Starting tailback Kregg Lumpkin, who sprained his ankle at Auburn, was ready to return to practice Wednesday, but coaches held him out as a precaution, head coach Mark Richt said. “He’s still a little tender, but he could have gone,” Richt said. Lumpkin’s backup Danny Ware, however, spent all Wednesday in the training room with an injured ankle and knee, Richt said. The coach said he is hope ful but does not know if Ware will be ready to play next week. Jason Johnson, a walk-on who earned a scholarship before the season started, could back up Lumpkin, Richt said. Johnson can play tailback and fullback. Richt also said fullback Brannan Southerland will have to be able to play both positions. Tailback Thomas Brown and fullback Des Williams are both out for the year.
