Swimmer reflects
on her leadership
skills this season
By ADAM LIPPER
alipper@randb.com
Claire Maust, co-captain
of the swim team, knows
that having fun is key to
having a good season.
Thus far, Maust’s extro
verted personality has
helped the team deal with
long practices and cope
with the pressures of
Bulldog fans’ high expecta
tions.
Maust feels she and fel
low co-captain Kara Lynn
Joyce — the 2006 National
Swimmer of the Year —
make a good pair.
“It’s been really great,”
Maust said of sharing cap
tain duties with Joyce. “We
complement each other very
well.
“I can think of her
strengths of being direct
and able to deal with prob
lems. I’m more of the vocal,
emotional, organizational
type leader.”
Before the season began,
Maust and Joyce sat down
with the team and made
three goals for the upcom
ing campaign, the same
ones Georgia has held for
the last eight seasons — to
go undefeated, to win the
SEC Championship and to
earn the NCAA
Championship trophy.
Unfortunately, one of
them can’t come true, as the
team is no longer undefeat
ed after losing to Florida
earlier this season.
The defeat was especially
hard for Maust because
it was the first dual-meet
she had lost during her
tenure.
However, the team
learned from the experi
ence, refocused and can still
fulfill its other two goals, she
said.
Maust’s individual goals
are still intact.
She wants to place in the
top eight in the 500m, 1650m
and 200m freestyle at the
SEC and NCAA champi
onship meets and, in order
to accomplish this, has set
exact times to reach for
both meets.
Maust has been prepar
ing for these goals since she

The business school’s

being a captain, she said.
Between academics and

Over her four years in
Athens, Maust has been
well rewarded for her hard
work.
She received the Ramsey

Academic and Athletic
Excellence and the first-
ever Jack Bauerle Endowed
Scholarship, named for the
team’s head coach. Maust
also was on the 2006 Acad
emic All-America Team.
Yet, she still lists one of
her most significant
achievements as helping the
Bulldogs win the 2005
NCAA Championship.
“That was an unforget
table experience,” Maust
said.
“You get to jump in the
pool with your sweats on.
The hours afterwards were
surreal,” she said.
“Jack told us that after
winning a championship,
the music is sweeter and life
is just better.”

Mind manners while exercising
B efore you march into
the weight room, make
sure you’ve got your
weight-room etiquette down.
Here’s a crash-course, just
in case:
► Re-rack the weights
after you finish on the proper
racks. If someone is waiting,
ask them how much weight
they want to use.
If you’re waiting, help un
rack the weights — don’t just
watch.
And if you’re using dumb
bells, return the dumbbells to
the proper place on the rack.
>- As much as I hate the
towel rule at Ramsey, I’ve
come to accept it.
Sweat stains on benches
and machines are disgusting
and completely unnecessary.
Wipe the machines or

A
benches before you leave, and
you’ll make the gym a better
place.
>- If you want a spot, ask
for one. If you see someone
who might need a spot, take
the initiative. At the worst,
you’ll meet someone new and
get on with your workout.
>- As crowded as the gym
may get, don’t stand in front
of someone performing a set.
Whether you are resting in
between sets or performing
an exercise, try to find an
empty spot or corner.
If you’re using a bench and
someone’s standing behind
you, move to the side or sit
down between sets.
> Odds are that you will
see someone in the gym you
know or recognize.
Whoever you do recognize,
don’t approach them mid-set.
Because you might distract
them from their exercise, wait
until that person is done.
>-1 know some monsters
go to Ramsey — people so
huge they stack plate after
plate on the barbells, lifting
it up and down as the bar
bends around them.
As big as they are, don’t
stare. Focus on your workout,
and how you can improve
your own physique.
>-1 was never a huge
advocate of advice-giving in
the gym, just because I was
never comfortable giving it.
Needless to say, if you
do critique someone’s form,
try to be as nice as possible.
If you are receiving the
criticism, accept the advice
as beneficial and preventa
tive.
A blow to your pride is well
worth a possible slipped disk
or other debilitating injury.
All in all, just be consider
ate. A little gym-etiquette
can go a long way.

Basketball star tells
all about departure
By SAM STEINBERG

Two year starter junior,
Channing Toney said the
main reason he made his
decision to transfer was
because his playing was
dropping, but he insisted
that he is leaving on positive
terms.
“Basically it has been a dif
ficult adjustment going from
a two -year starter,”
Channing said in a phone
interview Wednesday night.
“I just decided it would be
the best move for me.”
Toney, son of former NBA
player Andrew Toney, added
that his decision is not
based on the suspension that
he served when he sat out
the first game of the season
due to an academic issue
that occurred over the sum
mer.
“It is not based on that
one decision. That is not the
case,” Toney said.
Toney said he came for
ward for the interview in
order to put an end to rumors
surrounding his decision.
He said he still has a good
relationship with head coach
Dennis Felton.
“I had my differences but
at the end of the day Coach
Felton has been a great
coach,” Toney said, adding
that Felton and his staff are

trying to help Toney find
schools.
Toney said he does not
know which school he will be
attending.
“The coaching staff is try
ing to help me move on. They
could have left me in the
dust,” said the junior from
Snellville.
Toney is finishing up fall
semester classes at the
University and thinks that
the Bulldogs can make the
NCAA Tournament without
him.
“I just want to put it out
there that I wish the best for
the team. Everybody has
been supportive,” Toney said.
Due to NCAA rules
regarding transfers, it will be
at least a year before he plays
college basketball at any
other school.
Toney has prepared him
self to live with his choice and
expects to have a year and a
half left of eligibility when he
suits up again in January
2008.
Toney said, “At the end
of the day I made that
decision.”

“We have to play at
Georgia’s level.”
“Right now any game is a

the resulting extra playing
