Women’s swim and dive
captures Georgia Invite
By ADAM LIPPER

After three days of competition at
the UGA Fall Invitational, the No. 7
Georgia women’s swim and dive team
prevailed over No. 4 California 1073-996
to claim its most prestigious victory of
the season.
The No. 9 Georgia men’s team com
peted well but weren’t able to overcome
a 36-point deficit going into Sunday
against No. 5 Southern California.
The 951-884 loss ended the Bulldogs’
hopes for an undefeated season.
Although the meet pitted the
Bulldogs against five teams, it was clear
from the beginning that the meet would
be decided between Georgia and the
respective universities from the Golden
State.
After the Golden Bears won four of
Friday’s five swimming events, Georgia
head swimming coach Jack Bauerle said
the Lady Bulldogs were still searching
for their identity.
It must not have been hard to find.
On Saturday, the Georgia women
dominated California by turning a 22-
point deficit into a 40 point advantage.

Bulldogs,
Hokies set

in Atlanta
By MATTHEW BORENSTEIN

After losing four out of five games — namely to a
few SEC bottom-feeders — things
looked bleak for Georgia football.
Now, with a trip to the Chick-fil-
A Bowl less than a month away,
things look much better.
Georgia will play No. 14 Virginia
Tech on Dec. 30 in the Chick-fil-A
Bowl at the Georgia Dome, officials announced
Sunday afternoon. The game kicks off at 8 p.m.
Georgia (8-4, 4-4 SEC), after a loss at Kentucky
appeared to have no chance to play in a top-tier
bowl, played its way into the game, said Gary
Stokan, president of the Bowl, at a news conference

Start brushing up on the lyrics to your favorite
karaoke hit and practice hitting those high notes,
because UGA Idol is back.
Auditions for this year’s musical extravaganza
will be held Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. in room
141 of the Tate Student Center.
The UGA Idol competition, hosted by UGA
Hillel and Sigma Delta Tau sorority, is the semi
final round for the Campus Superstar competition
encompassing all of Georgia.
“We are hoping to get as many people as possi
ble to come down and sing away,” said Adam
Klein, Jewish Student Life Coordinator for UGA
Hillel. “We hope that we’ll get a lot of great talent.”
Contestants should prepare two one-minute
songs to perform a cappella before a panel of three
judges from Atlanta and Athens. The songs can be

Graduates
postpone
real-world
living, jobs
By JESSICA LEVINE

With winter graduation just
around the corner, many students
are preparing to enter the world of
Monday-through-Friday, nine-to-
five jobs. But University grads have
plans that stray from the typical
career path.
One student who graduated last
December hiked the Appalachian
Trail.
Josh Stallings, an alumnus from
Blairsville, spent four months back
packing from Georgia to Maine
rather than looking for a full-time
job.
“I wasn’t in the place where I
thought I needed to be to start a
career, and hiking the Appalachian
Trail was something I had always
wanted to do,” he said. “I figured if I
didn’t do it now, I wouldn’t have
another chance.”
He said the experience was no
vacation.
“It’s not glamorous, climbing up
and down the mountain all day and
knowing that you have to get up

and do it again the next day and the
next day,” he said. “I ran into bears,
nasty weather and sketchy people.”
Although some employers frown
on delaying your career, Stallings
said it was the right decision for
him.
Stallings said when he graduated
he was intimidated about getting a
job and becoming independent.
“Now I feel like, if I can do that,

ACC government
debates poverty
By BRIAN HUGHES

A beggar wandering the streets. A single mom
dragging her kids to work. Long lines at the soup
kitchen.
A coalition of community leaders are trying to turn
these common Athens scenes into distant memories.
And they want University students’ help.
Partners for a Prosperous Athens, a community
task force formed to reduce poverty, will hold a recom
mendation meeting at 7 tonight at Clarke Central
High School.
It will be the last chance for University students to
give their input before committees put the final
touches on their recommendations for the upcoming
year.
The PPA Steering Committee will then narrow
down the recommendations sometime early next year
and pass them along to local officials to be imple
mented.
There are six main areas of concern: child care,
building a diverse economy, educational attainment,
housing and transportation, physical and mental
health and total workforce.
Although many University students only stay in
Athens for four years, Vivian Fisher, chairwoman of
the Education Attainment Committee, said they
should be concerned about poverty as well.
“It’s impossible to ignore,” she said. “Someone can
only look away for so long without feeling the need to
help.”
Fisher said reducing poverty would enrich the com
munity,
