SPORTS The Red & Black | Wednesday, December 6, 2006 | 11 Kickers: behind-the-scenes stars F or as long as I can remember, I have had a thing for place-kickers. They often play second fiddle to star quarterbacks or get lost in an array of wide receivers and running backs, but in my mind, they are number one. This past weekend, games throughout the football world came down to the wire. For some kickers, it was a time to shine and for others, a time they would rather for get. As much as I sometimes detest Florida, I felt good for Chris Hetland when he hit his first field goal in what seemed like forever in Saturday’s SEC Championship game. The joy on his face and the excitement of the fans and his teammates over just a “lowly” field goal even gar nered discussion from the CBS commentators. Fans sometimes look at field goals as “boring” and not as exciting as scoring touchdowns, but as Katy De Luca kdeluca@randb.com ▲ Saturday’s ACC Championship game proved, field goals may be all a team can get, but enough to propel it to a monster victory. Kickers are often over looked as quality picks in the NFL Draft, but as a few teams found out this week end, final-minute field goals pushed teams past division rivals. The New York Giants’ playoff hopes may have been curtailed by the foot of Dallas’s Martin Gramatica, who sank a 45-yarder min utes after the Giants tied the game and a week after he was signed because previous kicker Mike Vanderjagt could not convert in the clutch. Georgia fans know about the Bulldogs’ kicking woes this season after losing Brandon Coutu to a ham string injury, and I think with Coutu healthy, we would have won at least two of the games we lost (see Vandy and Kentucky). When the going gets tough, as a coach, I would much rather have a consis tent kicker who can hit field goals from 40-plus yards than a “star” quarterback who is unreliable and sometimes erratic. Give kickers the respect they deserve. They might just win you a title. •I agree with how the BCS Championship game ended up, even if it does irk me that a team I hate might win the National Championship. So therein lies the million dollar question — who do I root for come Jan. 8? My first instinct screams OHIO STATE—Never root for those jean-short wearing Gators! They are one of our most heated rivals and I would almost feel if I was betraying my Bulldogs by pulling for the team that has beaten us consistently for the past 20 years. The last thing I want to see is Chris Leak and Urban Meyer hoisting that crystal football come January, but I am a reasonable person and can try to be objective. A win for Florida is also a win for the SEC, and it gives the conference a chance to finally be seen as the strongest college conference in the country. There is also some vindi cation in the fact that should the Gators succeed, Georgia would have lost to the national champions (and played them pretty close). At least I know I have a good game to look forward to at the end of an entertaining bowl season. — Katy De Luca is a page designer for The Red & Black SCOTT CHILDS | The Red & Black A As the Bulldogs found out this season, having a reliable kicker such as Brandon Coutu (96) can be the difference between wins and losses at clutch times. The Red & Black publishes daily during each semester according to the University schedule.
