WINTER: Freshmen welcome break
> From Page 1
period by traveling to Texas
with family and to North
Carolina with friends.
“I’ll probably only be home
for one week,” he said.
The residence halls will
close at 10 a.m. on Friday,
Dec. 15, and reopen
Wednesday, Jan. 3, before the
semester begins the following
Monday.
“I wish the halls didn’t
close Friday morning,” said
Christy Boudreau, a fresh
man from Woodstock.
“I’d like to spend
some time with my friends
without worrying about class-
work for a few days before I
leave.”
Many freshmen said they
are welcoming the respite
from their first semester of
college work.
“It’s a true break from
classes,” said Yashesh Shah,
a freshman from Hogansville.
“Winter break is a time to
recharge your batteries for
next semester and reunite
with friends from high school
who have a break, too.”
But some students say
tension at home might make
the holidays less relaxing
than they hope.
“I look forward to going
home until I get there and
remember why I wanted to
leave,” said Caitlin Taber, a
freshman from Lookout
Mountain.
“I’ve been home a few
times, and I still haven’t had a
home-cooked meal.”
Out-of-state students find
the shorter breaks trouble
some, especially for those
who have to find flights back
home.
“I don’t have to fly home,
but it’s a huge difference
going back to North
Carolina,” Smith said.
“My friends go to school
together, and I’ve had to
meet new people and become
more outgoing.”
Other students have start
ed making resolutions for
next semester to do what
they didn’t accomplish dur
ing their first.
“A few friends and I are
planning on going to a club,”
said Megan Upchurch, a
freshman from Newnan.
“We had planned to go to
one since we turned 18
but never did. I think college
ultimately helps you to
appreciate what time you
do have.”
RUNOFF: Maddox takes loss well
>- From Page 1
and I didn’t run it,” A1 Davison said.
Davison commended volunteers for their
help, which included phone banking and sign
efforts.
Davison said as the day progressed, he
drove around and scoped out areas of low
turnout.
After spotting a weak point, Davison said
he would call the campaign headquarters and
have them start calling constituents in the
lacking precincts.
Maddox said he had a large amount of help
from volunteers, as well.
The candidate estimated there were 20 or
more volunteers manning the phones in his
headquarters throughout the day.
Despite all the time put into his campaign,
Maddox took the loss in stride.
Maddox plans to retire next year from the
Georgia Department of Labor, where he has
worked for more than 32 years.
He said he will continue living the life he
had prior to entering the mayor’s race.
“Tomorrow I’ll wake up, go to the Y for my
spinning class, go to a rotary club meeting and
a church council,” Maddox said.
“I have a wonderful life.”
