8B I Thursday, December 7, 2006 | The Red & Black Finals Edition SPORTS Lady Dogs head out on road trip By TYLER ESTEP testep@randb.com GYM: Intra-squad meet determines starters Winter break is a time for rest, relaxation and recovery from finals, but that is not so for the No. 8 Lady Dogs (7-0) basketball team. The team will cover more than 7,000 miles over their “break,” journeying through Virginia, San Diego and Baton Rouge, with trips back to Athens in between. By PHILLIP KISUBIKA pkisubika@randb.com Before the Georgia men’s basketball team begins SEC conference play Jan. 6 at defending national champion Florida, the Bulldogs will have the chance to show their mettle against some of the best teams in the country. The Bulldogs are in the middle of an 11-day break before they battle battle against No. 18 Gonzaga at the Gwinnett Center on Dec. 16. The nine games played during that stretch include tonight’s game against Middle Tennessee State and opening conferance match ups against Florida and LSU in January. The team knows it will be an enjoyable but difficult trip. “It’s always fun to travel,” said freshman Ashley Houts. “I love traveling with my teammates, but it’s going to be tough. The Bulldogs have scored an average of 91 points per game, but that cannot be to be tired and push through it and be mentally tough and pull through it.” The cross-country adven ture will be hard for the girls off the court becuase of limit ed time off to visit family dur ing the holiday break. “If you play basketball, you know and understand our schedules. We’re just grateful to have three or four days to go home and spend with our families,” Houts said. Childs said the intra squad meet is fun but a little nerve-racking. She added that the presence of family and friends helps calm her down and give her confi dence when she competes. Childs said she will show off the moonwalk on the bal ance beam for her support ers this season. When Childs and her team return to the practice floor after Sneak-a-Peek, she will not have the luxury of supporting fans. There will be two other intra squad meets closed to the public. All three meets will play a heavy role in determining who starts the Stanford meet.
