DULUTH What a difference a day
can make at the SEC Tournament.
Twenty-four hours after holding
Ken; ky to 12 field goals In a dominat
ing quarterfinal win, the second-seeded
Lady Dogs were dominated themselves,
trailing by as much as 31 en route to a
disappointing 81-56 semifinal loss to
tliird-seed Vanderbilt (26-5) on Saturday
night.
The Commodores, one of the best
perimeter shooting teams in the country,
came out shooting 54 percent including
6-of-9 from three in the first half.
“They came out and had something
that they wanted to do, and we
didn’t affect it very much,” Georgia
head coach Andy Landers said after the
game.
"I'll take the responsibility for the way
we started the game offensively. I’ll take
all the responsibility for it. But I’m not
going to take any of the responsibility for
what we did on the defensive end. None
of it.”

The Tigers seemed poised

the Wildcats Friday, the Lady Dogs went
2-for-13 from behind the arc and shot Just
26 percent from the field in the first half
Saturday, allowing Vanderbilt to build an
insurmountable lead.
Landers was irate about what he
called his team’s lack of intensity.
“When you’re in a tournament and you
just don’t bring the intensity and the
toughness that you have to have to com
pete, it isn't just a surprise it’s shock
ing," Landers said.
The players could not figure out why
the intensity was not there.
“I really can’t say (why the intensity
was lacking),” said junior Tasha
Humphrey. “We had a defensive game
plan coming into the game. We just didn’t
execute."
The weekend leaves the Lady Dogs
(25-6) in a strange place as they look
toward the NCAA Tournament and
Selection Monday on March 12.
“Tournament teams have to bring a
fight to the tournament," Landers said.
“You have to realize that you’re one and
done. There’s a lack of heart. We
didn't come out of the locker room
ready.”

Bulldogs hopeful
in SEC first round
By PHILLIP KISUBIKA

It was a bittersweet
send-off for Levi Stukes and
Steve Newman.
On a day when the two
seniors played their last
scheduled game at
Stegeman Coliseum, the
Georgia men's basketball
team saw its hopes of an
NCAA tournament berth all
but fade away.
Tennessee’s Chris Lofton
scored 12 of his 14 points in
the final five and a half min
utes to push the Vols past
Georgia 71-65 Saturday.
With the loss, the
Bulldogs (17-12, 8-8 SEC)
clinched the No. 5 SEC seed
in the Eastern division for
next week’s SEC
Tournament in Atlanta.
In all likelihood, the
Bulldogs will have to win
the tournament to get into
the NCAA Tournament.
Stukes who returned
from a one-game suspen
sion got a good reception
from the crowd in the
pregame ceremony.
But he could not get it
going on the offensive end,
scoring only eight points on
2-of-10 shooting.
He hinted that the
events of the past week
affected his shot.

said.
Georgia charged back
from an 11-point deficit in
the first half to cut the
Tennessee lead to three at
halftime.
The Bulldogs would take
the lead early in the second
half and hold it until the
Vols’ go-to guy got hot.
Lofton, the SEC’s leading
scorer with 20.8 points per
game heading into
Saturday, was held score
less in the first half.
When his shots fell late in
the game, however,
it spelled the end for
Georgia.
“He’s won so many
games single-handedly for
them,” Georgia coach
Dennis Felton said. “Every
shot he hit was a dagger.”
The Bulldogs will play in
the first round of the SEC
Tournament Thursday
night against Auburn (17-
14, 7-9).
“Hopefully we can make
some noise in the the SEC
tournament and see what
comes from it,” Newman
said.
