GYMNASTICS: Coach builds success with low admission

a vision of what it should be. The
student-athletes play a significant
role with their great character and
athletic abiUty.”
Yoculan said the first turning
point for her was in 1995, when the
Gym Dogs had their first sellout
crowd of over 10,000 people.
That was a far cry from the
almost 200 fans that came to
Yoculan’s first meet as head coach
in 1983.
"We won our third national cham
pionship in 1993, and after that we
got a lot more recognition,” Yoculan
said.
The second turning point was the
premiere of the "Suzanne Yoculan
Gym Dog Show," a weekly show
hosted by Yoculan which offers news
about Georgia gymnastics The
show is broadcast nationally on
CSTV and throughout the
Southeast on CSS-TV and Fox
Sports Net.
Yoculan said the show, which
began about six years ago.
"increased exposure of the team
and program throughout the state.”
Bringing the fans in
If a team wins, does it really mat
ter if no one is there to see it?
Though Georgia gymnastics was
succeeding on the mats, the pro
gram has worked even harder to put
fans in the seats.
“Suzanne has been very proac
tive in getting the fans in, getting
people involved and making it ftm,"
Heenan said.
“I knew, as a non-traditional
sport, it would take more than win
ning to buUd a spectator following,"
Yoculan said. "You can be a jerk and
sell out a football game.”
Winning is only part of the formu

“We focus our promotion on the
families. The price is less than a
movie ticket,” Yoculan said. “It's
always been important to me that
the price be kept down.”
Not only do fans get cheap
admission, they also get free sou

and coupons at every meet.
Nina Idol, from Gainesville, said,
“We have been coming to see the
Gym Dogs for three or four years.
We love the excitement and enthusi

Nina’s husband, John Idol, added
that he likes the interaction
between the gymnasts and fans.
He also said the non-drinking

Families also benefit from meets’
time-friendly format. Each meet
rarely lasts more than 90 minutes.
"Our sport is more fan-friendly
because of the setup of the meet.
With other sports, you don't know
how long it’s going to be.
Gymnastics is an hour and a half,
beginning to end," Yoculan said.
The biggest draw to Georgia
gymnastics meets may be the acces
sibility of the gymnasts. The ath
letes the fans see on billboards
across Athens before meets are the
same athletes who stick around
long after meets to sign autographs.
“The Athletic Association’s been
really good about marketing the
gymnastics team as individual

University” and a professor in the
Institute of Higher Education at the
University.
"All that is part of their appeal.
They seem a lot more accessible
than football or basketball teams.”
With the family presence now
strong at Gym Dog meets, the focus
of promotions has been shifted to
University students.
“I think the more students
become educated about gymnas
tics, the more fan-friendly they real
ize our sport is. We’ve increased (the
student section) to almost 1,500
tickets for students every meet. Our
student demand has increased,”
Yoculan said.
The results show the gymnastics
team draws more fans per meet
than any other Stegeman Coliseum
tenant. In this season’s seven home
meets, the team averaged more
than 8,000 fans per meet.
In comparison, the men’s basket
ball team drew an average of about
7,300 fans in 17 home games this
past season.
The women's basketball team
drew an average of about 4,500 fans
in 13 home games this past season.
Doing more with less
In dollar terms, Georgia gymnas
tics is doing much more with fewer
resources.
In contrast to both the men’s and
women’s basketball teams, which
share Stegeman Coliseum and a
comparable number of athletes with
the Gym Dogs, the gymnastics team
is winning with relatively low expen
ditures.
For example, the Gym Dogs were
slated to have S3O thousand for
recruiting and coaches’ travel, com
pared to the $195 thousand and
$l2O thousand allocated to the
men’s and women’s basketball
teams, respectively, for the same
purpose.

“It's a great sport in that it does
n’t cost a lot of money to put on,”
Toma said.
Also, the Gym Dogs are getting
the job done in the classroom. When
the Athletic Association released
the Fall 2006 grades of the
University’s athletes, the gymnas
tics team had an average GPA of
3.36. The women’s basketball team
had an average GPA of 2.93, and the
men’s team’s average was 2.55.
Those figures can be misleading,
Toma said, because gymnasts “tend
to come from more affluent back
grounds and are more likely to have
those (academic) advantages.”
Regardless of their comparison
to other athletes, as the champi
onship banners and high GPAs
show, the Gym Dogs are living up to
the term “student-athlete.”
Making the production better
As the Gym Dogs are in Salt
Lake City today, pursuing their
third straight national champi
onship and eighth overall, Yoculan
said her biggest success lies in the
fan following the program has
gained in her tenure.
“I’m most proud of the atten
dance,” Yoculan said. “The atten
dance is something I focused on
from the beginning 23 years ago.”
Fans that were not bom enam
ored with the blue mats were made
that way through Yoculan’s dili
gence and the hundreds of young
women who have come through the
program to make it great.
The program speaks with the
voices of over 10,000 happy fans at
almost every meet.
“I'm proud that we have over one
thousand season ticket holders and
all our scholarships are endowed,”
Yoculan said.
“We’ve turned gymnastics into a
production and a form of entertain
ment for the family.”
