Stegeman annex
nears completion
Will house basket

By JASON BUTT

The days when Suzanne Yoculan
directed traffic are no more.
When the new Stegeman Coliseum
Annex and Practice Facility is com
pleted, the gymnastics coach will have
enough space to conduct smoother
and safer practices. Yoculan won't have
to direct where each gymnast needs to
be without fear of two of them crashing
into each other.
‘‘l was like a traffic controller,”
Yoculan said. "If you were dismounting
the beam, you had to make sure no one
was tumbling or else you would hit
them on the head.”
This S3O million practice facility will
be the new home of the men’s and
said Joyce.
Joyce, the 2006 and 2007 national
and SEC swimmer of the year, ended
her career at the University with a
total of 18 national titles including
four consecutive titles in the
50 and 100 freestyle races. She
also holds two individual
American records and owns
two silver medals from the
2004 Olympics in Athens.
Head coach Jack Bauerle is
proud of Joyce for her accom
plishments.
“There is no one more
deserving than her. She could
have been nominated for
all four of her years

women's basketball teams and the
gymnastics team. The 120,000 square
foot building is connected to
Stegeman Coliseum and provides an
easy access for the three teams housed
there.
With the new gymnastics center, all
the equipment will be spread out to
create more space and save time in
practice unlike the previous setup at
the Ramsey Center.
"From a safety standpoint, its well
equipped.” Yoculan said. “There's a lot
more space for the girls. We didn't have
a big enough gym before.”
Included in the new practice gym
will be a 24-seat spectator area for
practices. The floor mats, which are
traditionally blue, were special ordered
to be red something Yoculan said
she is thrilled about.

potential
By CLAIRE MILLER
cjmiller@randb.com
The Terry College of
Business’ new dean, Robert
T. Sumichrast, said he
plans to find ways to
improve the school when he
takes office Monday.
"My first goal as dean is
to learn as much as I can
about the Terry College of
Business and the University
of Georgia,” Sumichrast
said. “I want to talk with
students and alumni... and
develop a strategy with
everyone’s help.”
Sumichrast was a faculty
member at Virginia Tech
University from 1984 to 2003
and the dean of Louisiana
State University’s E. J.
Ourso College of Business
from 2003 to 2007 before
accepting his new position
as the dean of the Terry
College, according to a May
10 news release.
There were several rea
sons he decided to take this
position, Sumichrast said,
but Terry’s potential for
progress ranked highest on
his list.
“One of the first reasons
I wanted to come was
because I saw tremen
dous potential for improve
ment in the Terry College,”
Sumichrast said. “We can
take what’s already a
great college and really
make it outstanding."
