Campus, community benefit
from ‘student volunteerism’
By DENECHIA POWELL
The Red & Black
School just started and schedules
are busier than ever, but the Center for
Leadership & Service wants students
to take a little time to help others.
The University’s third annual volun
teer fair is the place to find several
organizations dedicated to giving back
to the campus and community.
Anna Beale, assistant director of the
CLS, said the two previous fairs have
been a success.
“We have many returning agencies
and organizations who have found com
mitted and passionate volunteers
through the fair,” she said.
Beale said there is a real need for
student volunteerism in Athens-Clarke

More space
essential to
progress of
vet school
By TOM MARINE
The Red & Black
Officials at The College of
Veterinary Medicine say they are try
ing to raise the bar to compete with
other prestigious vet school but need
more space to offset growing fields
and class sizes.
Paige Carmichael, associate dean
for academic affairs, and Public
Relations Director Tracy Giese said
the college works with its available
space at the comer of Carlton Street
and East Campus Road but still runs
into problems from that limited
area.
“We need anew teaching hospital
desperately,” Carmichael said. “The
University administration is aware
and behind our efforts to do so. We
have been doing a lot of rearranging
to function in the limited space.”
Brent Credille, a senior from
Greensboro, said he still receives a
great education from the college but
becomes frustrated when patient
animals are turned away due to space
concerns.
“We have a huge case load, but not
enough space,” Credille said.
“Sometimes we just run out of stalls
for the patients.”
