First woman to take the mic Saturday
By JASON BUTT
The Red & Black
On Saturday, history
will be made.
No, there probably
won’t be any passing
records set or rushing
titles broken. But when
the students pile into their
seats to cheer on their
beloved Bulldogs, a woman
will lead them for the first
time.
Senior Torie Trent of
Roswell will become the
first Mic Woman in the
University’s history. She,
along with returning Mic
Man Ben Robbins, will
lead the Georgia student
section in cheers.

When the 2007 Spirit

Cowboys ready
to fight Dogs in
season opener
By MARSHALL DUNCAN
The Red & Black
Beware Bulldog fans,
Oklahoma State is ready
for a shootout.
These Oklahomans may
not be the mighty Sooners
from Norman, but the
Cowboys from Stillwater
are on their way and have
something to prove.
The Cowboys come into
the game under third-year
head coach Mike Gundy,
who has a record of 11-13
since taking over the pro
gram in 2005.
The offense, lead by elu
sive quarterback Bobby
Reid and wide receiver
Adarius Bowman, is ready
to play between the hedg
es. Reid had a breakout
year last season with 2,266
passing yards and 24
touchdowns.
As if that’s not enough,
Reid added 500 rushing
yards and five rushing
touchdowns.
Twelve of those passing
touchdowns went to
Bowman, an All-America
candidate who also accu
mulated 1,181 receiving
yards.
To add to the explosive
passing game, the Cowboys
have two running backs
that will most likely split
time this season.
Georgia native and
junior college transfer
Dantrell Savage will be
starting after obtaining 820
rushing yards in 11 games
last season.
“We really like Dantrell.
He’s a scat back. Not real
fast but can make people
miss. He has good hands
and he’s tough,” said
Gundy.
Sophomore backup
Keith Toston added 631
rushing yards.
Both teams have a stra
tegic wild card when
Georgia’s offense goes up
against Oklahoma State’s
defense.
While Mike Bobo has
taken over the Georgia
offense and only has two

games under his belt for
the Cowboys to study,
Oklahoma State’s defen
sive coordinator, Tim
Beckman, also is stepping
into anew role after coach
ing Ohio State’s comer
backs the last two sea
sons.
Because of the many
weapons and returning
starters, Oklahoma State
will score often.
However, similar to
Georgia, its defense is
young and inexperienced
in many areas.
One of the most inter
esting stories on the team
is linebacker Donovan
Woods.
Woods was the teams
starting quarterback in
2004 before moving to safe
ty in the middle of the 2005
season.
Because of his athleti
cism and versatility, Woods
moved again this season to
a combination of safety
and linebacker brought
over by Beckman from
Ohio State.
Woods is joined by six
other players who started
games last season, includ
ing all of the linebackers
which will be needed since
none of the starting defen
sive linemen from last sea
son return for this year.
Despite the young tal
ent, Gundy is optimistic
about the defense.
“I’m excited to watch
our defense play. We think
we have some playmakers
on defense. Hopefully our
coaches have put them in
position to have success
early,” said Gundy.
As is the case with any
season, both teams go into
the season unsure of how
good their team can be.
With a big game at the
start of the season, both
teams will know their
potential almost immedi
ately.
“Georgia will be a great
game for us, because we’re
going to find out where
we’re at as a team after
that game,” said Gundy.
