Campus Transit awaits green light on green bus By TOM MARINE The Red & Black Campus Transit System Manager Ron Hamlin said the University is applying for federal assistance to buy hybrid electric and biodiesel buses. Campus Transit brought a hybrid bus to its facility on Riverbend Road Thursday to exhibit. Hamlin contacted The Red & Black about the event. “I think (switching to hybrid buses) sets a good example for other commu nities,” Hamlin said. “I would hope (the University) would be leading the state WARREN: Scandal prevents pharmacy students from taking current exam >• From Page 1A appointment was cancelled that day by college officials. Tom Jackson, vice presi dent for public affairs, said no plans have been made to keep Warren from teach ing this fall. He is sched uled to instruct in the spring, Jackson added. Alan Ray Spies, an assis tant pharmacy professor at Samford University, said in an affidavit that he learned in May 2007 Warren was giving NAPLEX questions to students. A senior administrator at Samford’s School of Pharmacy, who did not want to be named due to the pending investigation, said he was aware students at the school used Warren’s review course. The news began to reverberate at universities nationwide this week. Michael McKenzie, a senior associate dean for professional affairs at the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy, said to his knowledge none of the college’s students had participated in Warren’s review course. He said he recognized the potential effect of the investigation. “I would suspect they’ll WINGS ‘ SALADS • SANDWICHES • ENTREES & MORE m m ZMm yjft B _<tf*S?a L EB& %®l ft 8 Convenient Locations: EastsMa: 706-208-0811 Westslde: 706-548-7700 WE DELIVER - ALL DAY EVERY DAY Join us for "trivia on Tuesday nights in transit technology.” Hamlin said a switch would increase the fuel economy 25 to 40 percent. Even with the applica tion sent, the earliest the University can buy the new buses is in two years, Hamlin said. He said the buses would cost more than half a million dollars each compared to a University bus at $350,000. Nacha Davis, a fulltime bus operator, said she had her own reasons to be excited about the transit system being more envi ronmentally friendly. “I just became a grand mother,” Davis said. “We COLLEGE OF PHARMACY - m- - 'njPy JJjg 1 JOSH D. Jennifer M. Strickland, a member of Students for Environmental Awareness, said she supports every method the University employs to become more energy efficient. “To make (the buses) hybrid would be fabulous. It would show that the University is taking steps toward, using more renew able resources,” Strickland, a junior from Tifton, said. A recent graduate from the pharmacy school at The University of Colorado at Boulder, who requested not to be identified, was unable to take the licen sure test he scheduled for Monday. He said he has $130,000 in student loans and a baby due in November. “I’m just a pawn in the game,” the graduate said. “My career and profession hang in the balance.” Brian Mink contributed to this report.
