Cathy Bowden, the Star Wars track director, said it is overwhelming and fascinating. The leading attraction is the parade Saturday. People come as charac ters of all niches in the science fiction and fanta sy genre. “The costumes are just absolutely phenome nal,” said Bowden, who plans to dress as Shmi Skywalker. “These people spend so much time on these outfits, it’s surreal.” To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, surprises are in store. “We try to do some thing new every year and then we build on it,” Bowden said. One mqjor event included “Once in a Blue Moon,” which first debuted in October 1989. The event was the station’s first live variety show and has been an August staple for the majority of the past decade.
