Heisman Trophy candidate leads
Razorbacks to victory over Troy
By NOAH TRISTER
AP Sports Writer
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.
Darren McFadden is a lead
ing candidate for the
Heisman Trophy, so he’s
clearly one of college foot
ball’s top players this sea
son.
Troy coach Larry
Blakeney would go several
steps further.
“That guy is hands
down the best football
player I’ve ever seen,”
Blakeney said.

McFadden was his usual
self Saturday night, run
ning for a touchdown and
throwing for one to lead
No. 21 Arkansas over Troy
46-26. Last year’s Heisman
runner-up, the sensational
tailback rushed for 151
yards to help the
Razorbacks pull away
despite a shaky passing
game.
Arkansas now has a
week off before playing at
Alabama.
Arkansas led only 23-17
at halftime, but Felix Jones
FIRST & GOAL
scored on a 44-yard run
and McFadden tossed a
42-yard touchdown pass to
Crosby Tuck to make it
37-17.
“We feel like we’re play
makers on the team,”
McFadden said of himself
and Jones. “So we always
feel like we have to go out
there and do something to
get the team going.”
Jones also scored on a
90-yard kickoff return in
the second quarter, and for
a while, the special teams
handled most of the scor
ing for the Razorbacks.
The offense reached the
end zone only once in the
first half, on McFadden’s
12-yard run in the second
quarter. A number of drives
stalled deep in Troy terri
tory Tejada’s field goals
were from 35, 23, 28 and 30
yards.
With Southeastern
Conference play about to
start, the passing game
remains a question mark.
“It’s going to get tough
er now as it goes,” coach
Houston Nutt said Sunday.
Alabama reevaluates team
strategies for first SEC game
By JOHN ZENOR

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.
When Alabama players
settled down to watch film
of their blowout opening
win over Western Carolina,
the coaches didn’t offer a
celebration of how great
they played.
Instead, it was reality
check and constructive
criticism with a dash of
praise. It was Western
Carolina, after all.
“We did win 52-6, but if
you were in the meeting
room you wouldn’t have
felt like we won 52-6,” cor
nerback Simeon Castille
said Monday. “They’re not
going to let us sit back and
say, ‘Oh well, we beat
Western Carolina 52-6.’ It’s
not like that.”
What’s it like? Well, let
coach Nick Saban summa
rize.
“The good, the bad and
the ugly,” Saban said.
“That’s what I show
them.”
He found plenty to fit
into each of those catego
ries for the Crimson Tide,
which visits Vanderbilt on
Saturday in the
Southeastern Conference
opener for both teams.
The offense racked up
575 yards, but failed to
score twice on trips inside
Western Carolina’s 20-yard
line.

DANNY JOHNSTON Associated Press
▲ Arkansas running back Darren McFadden
watches the final few minutes of the team’s
46-26 victory in the football game against Troy
in Fayetteville, Ark., Saturday.
The defense didn’t allow
a touchdown but gave up
“a few too many big plays”
because of missed tackles
and mental mistakes,
Saban said.
He also praised the
team’s effort and intensity.
But after the game, he said
the defensive front was too
“soft” at the point of attack,
and reiterated that point
Monday.
Saban said, “We try to
attack the offense, and I
think there were times in
the game where we kind of
caught the blocks instead
of attacking the blocks.
That’s something that we
can improve on and we’ll
work hard to improve on.”
The defense faces much
bigger challenges ahead,
starting with a Vanderbilt
offense led by quarterback
Chris Nickson and receiver
Earl Bennett.
Linebacker Darren
Mustin is taking Saban’s
critique to heart.
“We’ve got to get better.
We’ve got to hit harder,”
Mustin said. “We’ve got to
be more physical up front.
I am part of that front
seven, and that’s a chal
lenge to me. He just basi
cally sat down and said,
‘Y’all played soft.’
“And if the head man
says you played soft, you
played soft.”

John Parker Wilson pre
pares to throw against
Western Carolina during
the second half of a
college football game
Saturday in Tuscaloosa,
Ala.
backer Prince Hall and
receiver Keith Brown
return from a one-game
suspension.
“They’ve served their
penance and they’ll have
an opportunity to compete
and get back and help the
team any way they can,” he
said. “It’s up to them to
show that they’re ready to
do that and prepared to do
that. In fairness to the guys
that competed in their
place, they should have to
compete with those guys
to be able to play.”
