Bulldogs win third
match, first shutout
By ADAM LIPPER
The Red & Black
Charlotte (2-1) hadn’t
allowed a goal in its first
two matches. The same
couldn’t be said about the
third.
The Bulldogs (3-0)
scored two goals and soph
omore goalkeeper Michelle
Betos posted a shutout
Thursday night at the
Turner Soccer Complex to
give Georgia its third vic
tory of the season.
After playing to a draw
in the first half, Georgia
broke free during minute
55. Freshman Rachel
Barstow played a ball down
the right line to spring
sophomore Carrie
Patterson. She then moved
around a defender to the
touch line and found Mar ah
Falle in the middle of the
box.
Falle took the pass and
one-timed it past
Charlotte’s goalkeeper
Lauren Brown to put
Georgia ahead for good.
“The first half was more
frustrating than the second
half,” Patterson said. “The
second half we came out
with more energy. When we
got the first goal, we knew
TAILGATE: Gameday
policies discussed
>* From Page 1A
Here are a few of the
policies tailgaters should
be aware of this year:
► No tailgating setups
before 7 a.m. on game
days. Fans coming from
other cities still may arrive
and park their cars before
Saturday, as long as they
don’t setup tailgating
equipment.
>■ Cable and power
hookups to University
property are forbidden.
All equipment should be
powered by the owners of
the equipment, possibly
through their vehicles.
► Portable restrooms
now are available through
out campus on gamedays.
The Boyd Graduate
Studies Building, Tate
Center, Student Learning
Center, Main Library and
East Village Commons
also have permanent pub

That second goal came
only 1:11 later. Patterson
received a ball from fresh
man Caroline Simpson 35
yards out. Patterson took
two touches and struck the
ball from the 18-yard line.
The ball dipped into the
right-side netting past the
goalkeeper’s outstretched
arm for Georgia’s second
goal. The quick succession
of goals gave Georgia a
comfortable lead for the
final 35 minutes.
“It felt like it was going
to be a 1-0 game, so we
knew that the first goal was
going to be crucial,” head
coach Patrick Baker said.
“We really wanted it to be
us.”

the two teams.
Georgia had two good
opportunities in a 10-min
ute span. In minute 18,
after receiving a through
pass from freshman defend
er Kelli Corless, sophomore
Carrie Patterson had an
open look at the goal. Her
shot curved harmlessly into
Brown’s arms.
Freshman Marah Falle
had a similar opportunity
in minute 28. With two
defenders close behind, she
attempted a shot just
inside the 18-yard box.
Again the ball went straight
to the goalkeeper.
When Patterson was
subbed out with eight min
utes left in the first half,
the 49ers took over.
Cha-lotte dominated pos
session and kept Georgia
on the defensive for the
remainder of the half
forcing two saves out of
sophomore Michelle Betos,
who finished with seven.
“I texted (Michelle) ear
lier in the day,” Baker said.
“I told her tonight’s the
night. You’re going to be
the difference maker.”
Betos complied and
kept a clean sheet, deliver
ing Georgia’s first shutout
of the season.
Crowd needs to ‘disrupt’ Spurrier
After practice on
Thursday coach Mark
Richt planned to meet with
the Redcoat band as he
does on a yearly basis.
“I want to tell them that
I appreciate them and how
much I respect what they
do, and how important
they are to our success,”
Richt said.
Richt announced the
DawgWalk will be
at 4:05 p.mi on Saturday
before the game
against South Carolina,
which begins at
5:45 p.m.
Richt also expressed his
desire for the crowd to be
loud.
“We need our fans to
get jacked up. They
thought last week was
important, this is at least
twice as important,” Richt
said.
The noise is especially
important because of
South Carolina coach
Steve Spurrier’s play call
ing style.
“The crowd noise is
important because Spurrier
loves to call the plays from
the sideline.
The more we can
disrupt that communica
tion, the better off we’ll
be.”

Gamble arrested
for no seat belt
Redshirt freshman
Darryl Gamble was arrrest

University police for driv

Gamble was released at
noon on $1,750 bail.
Coach Richt explained
the suspended license was

Gamble will not miss any

King would play.
