Injured
players
may miss
next game
By MARSHALL DUNCAN
The Red & Black
Senior safety and defen
sive leader Kelin Johnson,
who was injured in Saturday’s
loss to South Carolina,
missed practice Monday and
may miss this week’s game
against Western Carolina.
Johnson injured
his lower ribs on South
Carolina’s second drive of the
game.
“I made the tackle the
play before the touchdown,”
Johnson said.
“My body was twisted up
and I just heard a pop. It was
cartilage in my lower ribs.
I’m currently day to day, but
I’ll be back.”
Head coach Mark Richt
called Johnson questionable
for this week in a Sunday
press conference.
A.J. Bryant also was
injured in the game, but his
return to the field may not be
quite as hasty. Bryant, a
senior from Fort Valley, will
definitely miss this week’s
game against Western
Carolina and likely even
more.
“A.J.’s gonna be out a little
while. I’m not exactly sure
how long, but it won’t be this
week for sure and it may be
longer than that,” Richt said.
Bryant reportedly suffered
some cartilage damage and a
bone bruise on his left knee.

Bulldogs’ SEC East
losing streak grows
Georgia’s loss to South
Carolina on Saturday marked
the fifth straight SEC East
loss for the Bulldogs, or one
loss to every other SEC East
team. Georgia’s last SEC
East victory came last
September when the
Bulldogs beat the Gamecocks
18-0. Georgia’s next chance
to end that streak will come
on Oct. 6, when the Bulldogs
play the Tennessee Volunteers
in Knoxville.

Volleyball team aims
to recover alter loss
By ROBINNS EXUME
The Red & Black
After suffering its first loss of the
season, the Georgia volleyball team
will try to start anew winning streak
when it hosts Wofford tonight at the
Ramsey Center.
The Bulldogs (8-1) will be playing
their first game since losing 3-1 to
Georgia Tech on Friday, ending their
school-record streak of 25 consecu
tive games won.
The Wofford Terriers (3-5) have
lost five consecutive matches since
they started the season 3-0.
This is the first-ever meeting
between the two schools and is the
last non-conference game for the
Bulldogs before the team begins SEC
play Friday against the Florida
Gators.
The Bulldogs will look for more of
the same from junior Maria Taylor,
who registered a career-high 33 kills
in the loss to the Yellow Jackets.
The Bulldogs also have gotten solid
contributions from freshman Erika
Clark, junior Brooke Peugh and junior
transfer Mara Martin en route to an
8-1 start.
Though the team has had a great
start this season, it has done it against
teams that have struggled mightily all
year. The upcoming SEC schedule will
provide ample competition.
The Bulldogs will start out its con
ference play against the likes of
Florida, South Carolina and Kentucky,
who have a combined record of
23-4.
The game against Wofford will be
the team’s last home game until it
plays against Kentucky a week from
Friday.
A win against Wofford will tie the
Bulldogs for most wins by an SEC
East team this season Kentucky
currently leads with nine wins.
