Next to Last music festival to feature unique bands

The Red & Black
Athens-Clarke County Police
are investigating a series of inci
dents Wednesday morning that
left one man dead.
A masked gunman shot and
killed a convenience store clerk at
the Lays Shell Station on the cor
ner of Lexington and Gaines
School roads at about 3:25 a.m.
“This is a joint effort between
the Athens-Clarke County Police
Department and the Georgia
Bureau of Investigation, and we
are leaving no stone unturned,”
said Mike Ayers, assistant special
agent in charge of the Athens
GBI. The GBI Crime Lab is con
ducting an autopsy on the victim,
whose name authorities withheld.
The store’s surveillance camera
caught the incident on film, and
investigators say the tape could
reveal possible suspects.
The suspect was described as a
black male, about 5-feet-S-inches
to 5-feet-10-inches, wearing what
appeared to be a dark, hooded
sweatshirt, a dark-colored mask
covering a portion of his face,
pants and dark shoes, according
to police.
Police issued a sketch of the
man in a news release but asked
the press not to publish the
drawing.
About 30 minutes after the
shooting, the Kangaroo store on
Prince Avenue was robbed.
Ten to 20 minutes later, a cus
tomer at the Stop & Shop on
Danielsville Road experienced an
attempted robbery. The alleged
victim said someone tried to rob
him with a gun, but fled, accord
ing to police.
The suspects in both cases
were given similar descriptions,
but it is unclear if the incidents
were related, police said.
Anyone with information can
contact ACC Det. Chuck Ivey at
706-613-3888, ext. 337, or GBI
Special Agent Rebecca Shaw at
the GBI Tip Line, 1-800-597-8477.
“Common Ground and
Next To Last seem to
share the same basic goal,
which is to bring different
organizations within the
community to a common
space, increasing aware
ness of each other and fos
tering a kindred spirit,”
said Claire Campbell, of
the family-made folk band
Hope for Agoldensummer.
Donaldson also con
vinced Alfred Darlington,
who performs under the
name Daedelus, to join via
MySpace messages to the
musician, he said.
“Fortunately, he was
