BCS discussing ‘plus one’ game
By JASON BUTT
The Red & Black
With one national title
game and an argument for
why none of the teams
deserve to be there, the
BCS might be thinking of
an addition to the system.
BCS coordinator and
SEC commissioner Mike
Slive said a “plus one” will
be something to look into
after the way the season
played out.
“What I find interesting
about this year, as I think
about your question (about
a ‘plus one’) is this year
an anomaly or is this year a
precursor to what we might
see in the future,” Slive
said in a teleconference
call.
“And then trying to ana
lyze that question leads us
to the discussion we have
had on numerous occa
sions about whether this
format needs an adjust
ment. Therefore, as you
know, it’s a segue into my
continuing interest in con
tinuing to look at this for
mat, at least in terms of a
‘plus one.’”
A “plus one” system has
been discussed before. It is
a system in which there is
either a four-team playoff
or two teams are selected
after the BCS play the
week of Jan. 1.
Slive said if there is
another season such as
this, more momentum
could be gained for a “plus
one” system.
“It’s very possible. You
know, when we talked the
other day, I asked the ques
tion, is (No. 1) and (No. 2)
enough?” Slive said. “It
may be this season, and
this result may give us a
hint toward the answer to

that question.”
The BCS’ formula has
changed five times in its
10-year history, beginning
in the 1998-99 season.
The original formula fac
tored in an average of the
Coaches and AP polls,
three computer polls,
strength of schedule and
losses.
Today, the BCS is com
prised of three parts: the
Coaches poll, the Harris
Interactive Poll and an
average ranking of six com
puter polls making the
rankings more reliable on
the human polls rather
than the computers, some
thing the BCS has been
criticized for in the past.
However, moving in that
direction is unlikely. The
contract the BCS has with
the Fox television network
doesn’t run out until 2010,
and the Rose Bowl’s con
tract with ABC doesn’t
expire until 2014.
Changes in the BCS for
mat likely will not happen
until its contract expires.
While moving to a “plus
one” seems like the best
solution for outsiders, Slive
said it’s something that
wouldn’t fix the problems.
“We have to put this one
in the mix and look at it,”
Slive said. “If you go to a
plus one, you’re going to
have years in which it is
just very, very appropriate.
You’re going to have years
where it may not be so
appropriate.”
While Slive said he was
still “interested in explor
ing it in great detail,” he
said it would eventually
lead to people asking for an
eight-team playoff.
“Absolutely,” Slive said
when asked this question.
“Then I think what you’d
have to do is you’d have
to say two things. One,
you’d have to say that
football is a one-semester
sport and it’s not changing.
We’re not playing any
later than we’re playing
now, and we’re not going
to play in December when
we take exams.”

Sugar Bowl
not a cause
for outrage
I stood from my seat in
the Blind Pig Tavern
Sunday to applaud the
announcement that
Georgia would play
Hawai’i in the Sugar Bowl.
And I was joined by ....
absolutely no one.
For the rest of the night,
and every waking moment
since, I have had to listen
to the following ridiculous
complaints from ungrate
ful (and bordering on igno
rant) Georgia fans.
Complaint #1: Georgia
should have played for the
national title or played in
the Rose Bowl. Answer: No
and yes, kinda.
“The numbers do not
add up,” said safety Kelin
Johnson after hearing of
Georgia being “snubbed."
The way I see it, Kelin,
there are only two sets of
numbers that don’t add
up: 14-35 and 14-16. Ring a
bell?
Both LSU and
Oklahoma had the same
record as Georgia and a
conference title to show. I
hate to say it. but we were
third in line at best.
You can't say "no" to
Pasadena, because USC-
Georgia would be the
best game between the
two hottest teams in the
nation. But logic has about
as much to do with the
BCS as student govern
ment associations iiave to
do with students.
