Games to crowd
Lady Dogs’ break
By KEVIN COPP

While most University students
will have a full three weeks off from
school during the winter break, the No.
7 Lady Bulldogs (8-0) will have more
games than days off during the holi
day.
For the second straight season, the
Lady Bulldogs finished the fall semes
ter with their perfect record intact, but
they will have to survive six contests to
maintain that mark before classes
resume and the SEC season begins.
The Bulldogs first face off at home
against Davidson (4-2) on Sunday
at 2:30 p.m. The team then has a full
week of practice before taking on in
state foe Mercer (3-6) on Dec. 17 in the
final game before the Christmas holi
day.
After spending Thanksgiving in the
Bahamas for a tournament, head coach
Andy Landers stressed the importance
of having his players have some time
off in December.
“I think our kids sacrifice an awful
lot, and what we traditionally try to do
is get five to six days off at Christmas,”
he said. “Hopefully they appreciate
that enough that when they come back,
they come back focused and ready and
trying to compensate for that time off
in a positive way.”
Sophomore guard Ashley Houts
echoed her coach’s sentiments of com
ing back from Christmas ready to play,
as the team will make the trek to
Miami for a two-day tournament where
they will play Florida State (7-1) and

SEC teams to visit Georgia in diving invite
By RYNE DENNIS
The Red & Black
While you’re sitting at home resting and
digesting during the holidays, the diving
teams win prepare for the Georgia Diving
Invitational.
The event wifi be held Jan. 3-5 in the
Gabrielsen Natatorium at Ramsey.
“It’s a fun meet and a good way to get
the second semester going,” head diving
coach Dan Laak said.
The Invite will provide definite competi
tion for the BuUdogs. Teams such as Florida,
LSU and Auburn win represent the SEC.
Other headliners include Virginia, Purdue,
Pittsburgh and Penn State.
for missing or being late to
academic appointments last
semester.
“I’m pretty relieved and
just ready to get back out
there,” Jackson said. “I
learned a lesson (from the
suspension), and those rules
are there for a reason.”
The coming weeks will
give Jackson the first oppor
tunity of his young career
to be a nuyor contributor,
as a chronic shoulder injury
limited him in his first
year.
“I’m very hopeful that he
will bring another dynamic
to our team,” head coach
Dennis Felton said. “He cer

“With the SEC teams here, it gives us a
taste of what the SECs are going to be like,
as well as the NCAAs,” Laak said.
“Coming off of Christmas break we will
train for three or four days and then have
the meet,” Laak said. “It kind of gives them
something to work for.”
Following the Georgia Invitational, Chris
Colwell and Hanna Moore were chosen as
SEC Male and Female Divers of the Week,
respectively.
Colwell has been phenomenal this
season, winning the honor in all four
weeks it has been given. He swept the 1-me
ter and 3-meter diving board events at the
Georgia Invite and earned SEC-high scores
in the event.
in and make an impact as a
shot blocker, as a dominant
rebounder and as a domi
nant finisher around the
basket.”
Jackson showed some of
that aggressiveness in a win
over the Demon Deacons
last year. Felton said a dunk
by Jackson was key in the
87-86 victory in Winston-
Salem.
“I’ve been working a lot
in practice on my scoring
and being more aggressive,”
Jackson said.
“I had a good game
against (Wake Forest) last
year, and I don’t think there’s
a bigger game I could’ve
come back for this year.”
