Undefeated Warriors ready for Georgia
By MARSHALL DUNCAN
The Red & Black
While many have begged
for a college football play
off, the Hawai’i Warriors
have been playing playoff
type football all season.
With just one loss, the
Warriors would wind up in
a much less prestigious
bowl.
However, in coming back
to beat Washington 35-28,
the Warriors sealed their
undefeated season and a
chance to play in a BCS
bowl.
Led by senior quarter
back and Heisman candi
date Colt Brennan, the
Warriors’ run-and-shoot
offense is highly pass-ori
ented with Brennan
attempting on average 47
passes a game. The
Warriors have been suc
cessful with offense, scor
ing over 46 points a game
on its way to an undefeated
12-0 season.
Brennan, who missed
one game and most of
another, still managed 4,174
passing yards and 38 touch
downs. Brennan's two main
targets, Davone Bess and
Ryan Grice-Mullen, caught
a total of 201 passes for
over 2,500 yards and 24
touchdowns.
Receiver Jason Rivers
added 1,069 receiver yards
to give Hawai’i the only
triplet of receivers over
1,000 yards this season.
About Brennan’s
Heisman chances, head
coach June Jones said, “It
would be a long shot (if
Brennan won) because of
the (national) media atten
tion given to other players.
He not only deserves to be
there, but he deserves to
win it. Just look at what he
has done.”
The Warriors rarely run
the ball averaging less than
22 carries a game, but still
manage almost 80 yards a
game with no one player
carrying the ball more than
61 times all season.
Hawaii’s offensive suc
cess is impressive, but it
must also be noted that
the Warriors had one of the
easiest strength of sched
ule in division I-A this sea
son with opponents’ com
bined record of 53-92.
After playing teams like
Alabama, Oregon State
and Arizona State in 2006,
Hawaii’s schedule was
much easier this season,
especially after Michigan
State bought itself out of
its match-up with the
Warriors.
“This year, we tried to
play everyone, but no one
would play us,” Brennan
said.
The Warriors are much
less accomplished on
defense, giving up just over
24 points a game to its
opponents.

Conference (WAC) was the

powered offense, the
Bulldogs took an early lead
and held on to win 48-13.
The Bulldogs ended the
season against a perceived
lesser talent in West
Virginia in the Sugar Bowl
only to lose 38-35.
When the Bulldogs face
Hawai’i in the Sugar Bowl,
the team will need to

Many question a smaller
conference team’s ability
to compete with the bigger
conferences, but when
invited to a BCS bowl,
mid-major teams are
undefeated(2-0) with Utah
defeating Pitt in 2004 and
Boise State defeating
Oklahoma last season.
“We’ve been in so many
close situations this year,”
Brennan said. “Adversity
makes you better. That’s
why we’re undefeated.”
