Adams makes playoff proposal
BY JASON BUTT
The Red & Black
University President
Michael F. Adams held a
news conference Tuesday
at the Georgia Center of
Continuing Education,
releasing his own proposal
to alter the college football
bowl postseason to a sys
tem that would consist of
an eight-team playoff.
“I think what we just
completed is the most
exciting college season in
memory with the least
exciting bowl series in
memory," Adams said.
"You put those two togeth
er and you see the legiti
mate need for change.”
In his opening state
ment, Adams said that “for
some 20 years. I have
opposed a football playoff
system for academic rea
sons.” He added that while
he is reserved about
lengthening the regular
season, he would like to
see the current BCS sys
tem replaced with a play
off.
‘ But this year's experi
ence with the BCS forces
me to the conclusion that
the current system has lost
public confidence and sim
ply does not work,' Adams
said. “It is undercutting
the sportsmanship and
integrity of the game.”
Adams, who is also the
NCAA executive commit
tee chair, said he would
like to see an NCAA com
mittee select eight teams
that would play in the four
BCS bowl locations before
the second semester.
When asked if a playoff
would diminish the regular
season for the Football
Bowl Subdivision, Adams
pointed to the exciting col
lege basketball season,
which has an even longer
playoff.
“I don’t think the bas
ketball season is dimin
ished by the 65-team play
off, and at the end of the

Committee moves to restrict
number of class withdrawals
BY BRIAN MINK
The Red & Buck
Despite opposition from student rep
resentatives. the Educational Affairs
Committee of University Council
approved Tuesday a measure to limit
the number of student course withdraw
als to four throughout an academic
career.
The controversial proposal next will
go through the council's executive com
mittee and full body before it takes
effect.
Also, administrators will have to
define many of the policy’s details before
then, and changes could be made to the
proposal before it is effected.
The University's current policy allows
unlimited withdrawals.
"I really am concerned about the
impact in general that this will have on
the student body," Student Government
Association President Katy Bowers said
after the meeting. “I hope that the fac
ulty who were unwilling to move from
(allowing four withdrawals) understand
how drastic the consequences could be

"This happens from time

any kind of break in," Jackson
said.

We’re No. 2!
Richt ‘excited’ about rank
BY TYLER ESTEP
The Red & Black
Georgia football was
ranked No. 2 in Tuesday’s
Associated Press poll, fin
ishing behind conference
mate LSU for its highest
final ranking since 1980’s
national championship
season.
The Bulldogs received
three first place votes fol
lowing their 11-2 season
and a 41-10 drubbing of
Hawai’i in the Sugar Bowl.
USC, Missouri and Ohio
State closed out the poll’s
top five.
“We’re excited to be
ranked so high. (The AP
Poll) is the one poll that
really does matter,” Georgia
coach Mark Richt said in a
teleconference Tuesday.
“No. 2 in the AP and No. 3
in the coaches’ poll is a tre
mendous honor just from a
personal standpoint. Asa
head coach, it’s the high
est-ranking team I’ve ever
been involved with."
Richt’s Bulldogs fin
ished third following the
2002 season, then the best
finish during his now-sev
en-year tenure.
“Over the last seven
years, we’ve been able to
play together, and when
bad things happen to us,
we’ve always rallied,” Richt
said.
The AP Poll is an accu
mulation of votes from 65
sportswriters, and the
Bulldogs’ first place votes
came from across the coun
try.

for many students.”
Jere Morehead, vice president for
instruction, said he strongly supports
Tuesday’s 6-2 vote to limit withdrawals.
In the meeting he said unlimited with
drawals encourage bad decision-mak
ing.
He said each semester, thousands of
seats are left empty by students who
withdraw and are likely to take the class
again.
“I think this policy will promote a
better intellectual climate for the
University,” he said. “I think this is a
very good policy.”
The committee initially considered
limiting students to two withdrawals
before 60 hours of classes and two after
the 60-hour mark, but several commit
tee members said it is important to give
underclassmen more leeway in with
drawing.
Bowers cautioned committee mem
bers in the meeting, saying implement
