New bar offers unique beer, atmosphere

Hot Comer’s now defunct
"quiet room” space is up and
running again only this time
with beer brews and socializing
as opposed to coffee beans and
studying.
University alumnus Eric
Johnson and his longtime pal
Mike Vemelson decided to
introduce a different kind of bar
to the Athens community —one
that doesn’t require yelling
above loud music.
“You don’t come here to get
drunk,” Vemelson said of their
bar, Trappeze. “You come here
for good conversation. The only
reason it gets loud is because
people are talking.”
Johnson and Vemelson mod
eled Trappeze after Brick Store
in Decatur, a bar that serves
many kinds of beer in bottles
and on draught.
"We wanted to bring some
thing truly special to Athens
because we love the city,”
Vemelson said. "We’re bringing
the best beers around the world
to Athens.”
The bar features many
uncommon beer brews includ
ing brown ales, barley wines and
Belgian blondes.
“Eric is a self-professed beer
geek, and we just started talk
ing about the kind of bar that
we wanted to go to in Athens,”
Vemelson said.
Johnson built the tap system
for the 27 draught beers himself
and the two also built the cool
ers housing the other 164 bot
tled beers.
The name is a play on words
referring to the Trappist beers
brewed in monasteries or under
the authority of monks.
Right now, there are six beer
producing monasteries in
Belgium and one in the
Netherlands. These beers have
an official hexagonal logo, simi
lar to the one Trappeze has
taken.
“The idea behind the bar is
to bring a beer selection, featur
ing a lot of imports from
Belgium, Germany and all over
Europe," said bartender Aaron
Jollay. “It’s not a place you can

Trappeze doesn’t sell any
low-end domestic beers, such as
Budweiser but does have some
liquor such as vodka and scotch
and also offers champagne and
a wine list.
Jollay recommends any of
the Belgian beers, specifically
St. Bemardus Abt 12, a dark
ale.
“Some beers have these
amazing tastes you wouldn’t
think beer could taste that
way,” he said. “They have com
plicated flavors, too, like

“A stray has five days.
But if the owner has sur
rendered the dog, these
dogs are the first to go.
Sometimes, they are
house-broken, and it's sad
that they will be eutha
nized just because the
owners don't want it any
more,” she said.
According to the
Humane Society’s Web
site, three to four million
dogs and cats are eutha
nized by shelters annually.

The price range for these

example of many commu
nities’ attempts to lower
that statistic.
Since its creation in
1992, ACR has grown to
around 25 foster families
and nine board members.
In 2007, Athens Canine
Rescue rescued 146 dogs
and successfully placed
them into homes.
However, in order for
the organization to con
tinue assisting the pets, it
continually needs volun
teers and donations.
“Rinding is always an
obstacle when you are
nonprofit.” Garcia said.
► Located next to Hot
Corner Coffee on Wash
ington Street, the Trappeze
Pub offers a unique beer
selection. It is the only pub
in Georgia to have an ele
phant tap of Delirium
Tremens, an imported beer
from Belgium.
“Our beer selection is the
most unique thing about us, but
we’re constantly looking for
ways to move it forward to the
next level,” Vemelson said.
Fortunately for ACR,
aid came in the form of
Tim Terilli.
Terilii created Rock for
Paws as part of a
Landmark Education
project last year
“I think (that) because
last year was a success, I
wanted to feed off of that,
to bring more awareness
of the organization to the
Athens community," he
said.
Through Terilli's
efforts, four bands are
lined up to perform
Saturday with local rock
ers, The Winter Sounds,
headlining the benefit.
Patrick Keenan, lead
singer of The Winter
Sounds, said that aiding
Athens Canine Rescue is
just one out of many
causes he would like to
support.
