Momentum not enough to sustain Bulldog lead By FLETCHER PAGE The Red & Black Three minutes into the second half of Saturday’s 86-77 loss to Tennessee, Georgia senior Terrance Woodbury brought the ball up, flashed a behind-the back dribble and stroked a 17-foot jumper to tie the game at 40. Woodbury backpedhled down the floor, staring confidently into the crowd and at his Volunteer defender J.P Prince. Georgia had the momentum. Georgia had found its swagger. “It was just within the rhythm of the game,” Woodbury said. “I felt like my shot was good alljiight, and I decided to come off the driliJatearad knock one down.” Woodttyry,’;? jjhot was one of seven con verted baskets by the< Bulldogs in a five minute striHch, as Georgia used an 18-4 run to take lead. At that- moment, up by 10, Georgia looked like a different team. This was not the same team that played Wofford close and lost to Loyola. Georgia was experi encing a flicker of brilliance, a sign of potential fulfilled. “My shot took our momentum up, but Men’s basketball works on rebounding weakness By MICHAEL FITZPATRICK The Red & Black The beginning of the end for the Georgia men’s basketball team occurred in the final five minutes of Saturday’s loss to No. 15 Tennessee, following a missed defensive rebound. With Georgia holding a pre carious 71-67 lead, Tennessee’s Bobby Maze stepped to the free-throw line with the chance to cut Georgia’s lead to one possession. Maze hit the first, but missed the second only to have the rebound go through the hands of Georgia junior Albert Jackson and skitter to the Vols’ Tyler Smith. Smith then dished the ball to a wide-open Cameron Tatum, who drained the game-tying 3-pointer on a rare four-point possession. From that point, Georgia (9-7,0-1 SEC) looked and played as if it were psychologically bro ken, as Tennessee (10-4, 1-0 SEC) finished the game on a The Red & Black publishes daily during each semester according to the University schedule. But I think now it’s starting to sink in and the next game we will prove that we are ready to play 40 minutes and not just 35.” Rebounding, especially in the frontcourt, became a focus for the Dogs after allowing 23 of them in Tuesday’s loss to Georgia Tech. But it remained a glaring concern after being out rebounded 19-8 on the offensive glass and 48-35 overall. Regardless of what hap pens. If somebody makes a shot or misses a shot, we still have to be able to grafter it on the defensive end and sustain our lead to finish off the win.” But in what seemed like a-ft&irii'the swagger was gone. As Tennessee closed the gap, the Bulldogs’ replaced with panic. uiiiJ boos • “When we lost our cushion, we got pan icky,” said Georgia head coach Dennis Felton. Georgia’s offense went from a glorious feast to all out famine. A Jeremy Price dunk with 8:09 left in the game would be the Bulldogs’ last converted field goal until a meaningless 3-point shot by Ricky McPhee with five seconds remaining on the scoreboard. Georgia only scored nine points during the drought, all from the free-throw line, until McPhee’s three. For the third consecutive game, Georgia had blown a second half lead. The 6-foot-11 Jackson, who started at center, did not record a point or a rebound in 13 min utes of action while the 6-foot-8 Price only grabbed one rebound in 21 minutes. Tennessee forced 17 turnovers that led to 22 points. Georgia did well to trip up the Volunteers, creating 16 but only managed 13 points off those extra possessions. v ‘we just have to grow up,” Zac Swanseyisaid. “At times we lack leader ship? arid that’s on me as a point guard. Yotf can start with me and our seniors on down. We’ve just got to play our game and not get rattled.” Vanderbilt is next on Georgia’s sched ule, as the Bulldogs travel to Nashville Wednesday for their second SEC game and first on the road. The Commodores are 11-4 and will look to take advantage of the Bulldogs’ weaknesses. “We can play with just about anybody in our conference and beat just about anybody in our conference,” said Georgia forward Trey Thompkins. “It’s on us to take care of what we have to do in order to do that. Tennessee is quite possibly the best team in our conference, but we played them tough and we had a chance to take the victory. We just got to step on the gas pedal more when we have the opportunity to take control.” Felton defended his center after the game saying there may be other reasons for his lack of rebounds. “A lot of times when Albert doesn’t have standout rebound ing numbers it is because he is so busy keeping one of their pri mary rebounders off the glass and letting one of his team mates pick up the rebound,” Felton said. “Without watching the tape, I’m not sure, but it may have more to do with Albert not being aggressive enough.” Heading into Wednesday’s tilt at Vanderbilt, the Dogs believe they can correct their problems and be successful going forward. “We’ve basically lost the last three [games] the same way, in the last few minutes, because of a few breakdowns here and there,” freshman Dustin Ware said. “But I think we’ll correct it because we have a bunch of winners in that locker room, and I really believe we’ll correct that.” MONOGRAM CAR DE CALS! It’s a great confidence booster,” Houts said. “We’re just going to try to build on what we did tonight to get ready for the next team.” Porsha Phillips and Angel Robinson led Georgia in scoring with 14 apiece, and Houts scored 13 and dished a career-high nine assists for the Lady Dogs.
