Though the University Council’s
Curriculum Committee voted in
December to add new engineering
majors, it may still be “a couple years
down the road,” said the committee’s
ch#ur.
“I think it’s going to take awhile
because a lot of this involves money,”
David Shipley, chair of the Curriculum
Committee, said in a phone interview
Friday. “With the current economy it’s
going to take awhile. We’re looking at a
couple years down the road.”
The 800 Mark
Lady Dog coach seeks milestone

Just one win shy of 800 for his
career, Andy Landers remembers
his first win as head coach of the
Lady Bulldogs just as much as
the last.
“I remember the first game, I
don’t remember a lot after that,
but I remember that first game,”
Landers said. “[lt was] Piedmont
in [Stegeman] Coliseum, maybe
65 people there, maybe not. [But]
we played and won.” '
Landers won that first game
at Georgia 88-69 on Nov. 10, 1979,
which was his first win after
82 at Roane State Community
College in Harriman, Tenn.
Just months before his first
game, Landers was writing then-
Georgia Athletic Director Vince
Dooley a letter saying he wanted
to build the Georgia program
into a national powerhouse. And
that’s just what he has done over
the last 30 years in Athens.

The Curriculum Committee approved
the addition of civil, electrical and
mechanical engineering majors at a Dec.
’ 5 meeting. Shipley said the next step is
for the proposal to be considered by the
Executive Committee on Jan. 20, and will
then go to the University Council on Feb.
5 if approved.
The proposal must also be approved
by the Board of Regents before the majors
can be added.
“This is a pretty big step for the
University,” Shipley said.
However, Landers is humbled
by the great people that have
surrounded him through the sea
sons. Whenever asked about
approaching the 800-win mile
stone, he always credits everyone
but himself.
“It’s about the players. A lot of
people could have coached the
kids that I’ve had,” he said.
“We’ve always had a very sup
portive administration, from
presidents to athletic directors
... We’ve always had very sup

A trait that is often overlooked
about Landers is his influence on
past and present players.
La’Keshia Frett was a four-time
All-SEC performer in the mid

assistant to Landers and the
Lady Bulldog program.

“I love the campus and
the environment on the cam
