‘Defensive intensity’
key to Lady Dogs win
By MANIK K. GUPTA
The Red & Black
Simply put, it was a historic night
at Stegeman Coliseum for the
Georgia women’s basketball team.
With the Lady Bulldogs’ 74-28
thumping of Savannah State
Thursday night, legendary Hall-of-
Fame coach Andy Landers won his
800th career game, becoming just
the fifth coach in Division I women’s
basketball to accomplish this feat,
and the second fastest to do so.
When asked about the signifi
cance of his 800th career win,
Georgia women’s basketball head
coach Landers simply shook his
head and down-played the historic
achievement.
“It is what it is,” Landers said in
regard to his landmark victory. “I’m
happy that we won it, but I’m not
happy that we won it for me. As
typically a coach does, I saw some
things out there that need to get
better.”
Throughout his 30 years at
Georgia, Landers has preached the
significance of defense. Therefore, it
was only fitting that the Lady Dogs

allowed the second fewest point
total in school history and the low

The pressure of the 2-3 zone
defense got to the Lady Tigers of
Savannah State early as Georgia
junior Ashley Houts and freshman
Meredith Mitchell each recorded
three steals in the opening eight
minutes to build an early 27-8 advan
tage for the Lady Dogs.
Mitchell, who earned her first
career start, set a career high with
eight points and five steals and
helped set the tone for the Lady
Dogs as they never trailed through
out.
“Coach told us guards that you’re
going to get your points from defen
sive intensity, pressure on the ball,
getting up to the [free-throw] line
and just making plays in transition,”
Mitchell said. “And that was our
strategy.”
With her third steal of the night
and the 227th of her career at the
12:56 mark in the first half, Houts
moved into eighth place overall in
career steals, surpassing Coco Miller.
She finished the night with 17 points
and four steals while playing a sea-

Georgia dominated the glass,
recording 57 rebounds to Savannah
State’s 28.
Forward Jasmine Lee came off
the bench and notched her first
career double-double with 10 points
and 11 rebounds.
HOOPS: Landers
a ‘father figure’
► From Page 1
More than anything, Landers is respect
ed by his players because of what he does
away from the basketball court.
For junior Ashley Houts, Landers has
played a huge role in her life.
“His effect on us and what he does off
the floor, he’s like that father figure,” she
said. “I think the biggest’* thing that drew
us [to Georgia] is what he does for us off
the floor. It’s just a respect that he gets
from players, fans and everyone else around
him.”
The way that his players continue to
keep Landers a part of their lives is enough
to see why he has been successful. But
until it comes from someone such as
Edwards, the effect he has on each individ
ual player can’t be fully comprehended.
“When I didn’t know who I was as a kid
here on this campus, he knew and he kept
us in line,” Edwards said. “He’s bigger than
a mountain to me. Anything that he needs
or wants, just call me and I’ll be there for
him.”
