Black box

crew’s
account
NEW YORK The black
box recorders recovered from
the US Airways jetliner that
splashed down in the Hudson
River captured thumping
sounds, the sudden loss of
engine power and the pilot’s
calm “Mayday” call, evidence
that seems to back up the
crew’s account of hitting a
flock of birds shortly after
takeoff.
The National
Transportation Safety Board
gave an account of its inter
view with the pilot, Chesley
B. “Sully” Sullenberger, and
dispatches from the cockpit
voice recorder emerged over
the weekend.

World Trade Center site on a

investigator said Monday.
“I think this one-is going
to be studied for decades,”
said Robert Benzon, chief
investigator on the case for
the National Transportation
Safety Board.
Benzon said the fact that
all 155 people aboard the
plane survived removes the
guilt and finger-pointing that
sometimes accompany avia

sons learned from the suc
cessful ditching into the
Hudson River could improve
air safety.
“In one like this, I think
there’s potential for a lot of
good to come out of it, long
term good,” he said.

Israel to pull all
troops from Gaza
JERUSALEM Gaza’s streets brimmed with
energy Monday as people picked up the pieces
of their lives, while Israeli officials said they
planned to pull all troops from the territory by
Barack Obama’s inauguration as president of
the United States on Tuesday.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
planned to travel to Gaza on Tuesday to inspect
the damage and visit United Nations facilities
hit in the fighting. The visit will make him the
highest-ranking international official to visit
the territory since Hamas militants took it over
in June 2007.
A top European Union official said Europe
wouldn’t help to rebuild buildings and infra
structure destroyed in Israel’s offensive until
Gaza was governed by rulers acceptable to the
EU. The EU classes Gaza’s current Islamic
Hamas rulers as a terrorist organization.
Israel made its troop withdrawal plan known
at a dinner Sunday with European leaders who
came to the region in an effort to consolidate
the fragile cease-fire, government officials said.
The Tuesday pullout target won’t be met if
militants resume fire, officials said.
By getting its soldiers out before the Obama
inauguration, Israel would spare the new
administration the trouble of having to deal
immediately with a burning problem in Gaza.
Obama has said Mideast peace will be a priori
ty for his administration.
No violations of the truce have been report
ed since Hamas ceased fire Sunday. But the
quiet remains tenuous because neither side
achieved long-term goals.
