President Barack Obahia
has already executed an
order to close Guantanamo
Bay, but other looming
national concerns from
a wavering economy to a
pending health care crisis
still linger. Several
University faculty mem
bers weighed in on
Obama’s other campaign
promises.
“The big challenge he
faces is to try to get the
economy back on track,”
said William Lastrapes, a
professor of economics, in
a phone interview
Wednesday. “The tricky
thing is to do that without
trying to establish too
much of a permanent pres
ence of the federal govern
ment in the economy."’
Lastrapes said he thinks
Obama will implement a
stimulus package quickly
to increase employment,
build infrastructure and
decrease certain taxes.
“When the federal gov
ernment has all these
spending programs, some
times the only motivation
is to create jobs, not value
the things people want
and need,” Lastrapes said.
“If [Obama’s economic
plan] is simply to create
jobs and not value, it is
ultimately not going to
work.”
Lastrapes noted, howev
er, Obama’s haste in imple
menting his stimulus pack
age.
“One problem with this
type of plan is that it takes
a while for this type of
thing to get up and run
ning. By the time it is, it
may be too late,” he said.

During the address, Adams

The University student put it all on
the line almost three years ago while
competing in a no-limit Texas Hold ’Em

than $1 million.
While that might be every college
student’s dream, Williams is almost •
exactly where he was before winning it
all: at the University, pursuing a degree.
“It’s not been the exact same, but
pretty close,” said Williams, a senior
from Dunwoody.

It doesn’t appear defensive
coordinator Willie Martinez
will be leaving Georgia any
time soon.
Well, at least according to
Georgia linebacker commit
Mike Gilliard of Valdosta.
When asked if his decision to
attend Georgia would be
affected if Martinez left for
Miami, Gilliard said offensive
coordinator Mike Bobo told
him Martinez was staying
put.

Gilliard added if Martinez
were to leave, he’d stay true
to his commitment to
Georgia.
“It wouldn’t affect my
decision,” Gilliard said.
“I’ve gotten to know him
real well through the
recruiting process, and if
he were to leave, Miami
would be getting a real
good defensive backs
coach.”
Interestingly, Gilliard
could possibly be play-
ing in Martinez’s secondary
next year.
