Film festival embraces
work of Georgia artists
By BECKY ATKINSON
The Red & Black
Terry and Susan, former college sweet
hearts, are getting married. Like any cou
ple about to tie the knot, struggles arise
as Terry and Susan’s families meet and
plan the myriad wedding details.
However, unlike most couples, Susan is
Caucasian and Terry is Polar-American, a
race of people with blue skin.
This scene describes the movie
“Something Blue,” an “improv mocku
mentary,” which will screen at the Dixie
Film Festival this weekend.
“What we have done is invented a fic
tional race to talk about race, class, gen
der, age,” said co-director and co-writer
Curtis Krick. “It’s a way that won’t alien
ate people but will get them to see things
in anew light, a different angle and with
a sense of humor.”
“It’s a fun film that’s got some sub
stance to it but that’s also got a lot of
laughs,” Krick said. “It proves you can
make a movie with no names and no
money.” .
Krick grew up in and around Athens
and briefly attended the University.
“[The movie is] something I’m proud
of sharing with the community I grew up
in,” Krick said.
The Dixie Film Festival grew out of a
short film called “Dude Countyline” that
was produced north of Athens. The pro
duction company, F.A. Entertainment,
rented a theater in Atlanta to premiere
the movie and invited other filmmakers
to submit their work. Out of 120 works

Volleyball team sees promise
By ZACH DILLARD
The Red & Black
Georgia volleyball
proved it can compete
against the nation’s best
last weekend.
This weekend’s upcom
ing slate of matches will
give them a chance to
prove they not only can
compete, but they can
win.
“We played the very
best volleyball that I’ve
seen us play since I’ve
been here on Sunday,”
head coach Joel
McCartney said. “We
didn’t have enough with
the way we played Sunday
to get it done against the
No. 8 team (Kentucky) in
the country, but if we play
that level of volleyball, it’s
enough to win a lot of
matches.”
Georgia (11-7,2-5 SEC)
and the Ramsey Student
Center will host confer

Sunday against South
Carolina and No. 9 Florida,
respectively.
The Gamecocks (10-7,
2-6) come to Athens look
ing to end a four-match
losing streak and to buck
the historical trend of this
matchup. The Bulldogs
dominate the all-time
series against South
Carolina 40-15.
However, the first week
end match has been the
Achilles heel of Georgia
this season, as five of the
Bulldogs’ seven losses
have come on a Friday this
season.
“We are addressing
some concerns about how
we start our weekend and
not just continue to try
and fix things, but be able
to be in a position where
we can start well on
Friday,” McCartney said.
“That will be our focus
going into the South
Carolina match this week
end.”
