ASHLEY STOCKLAND I TY. Rio Buc
▲ Guard Vincent Williams scored a career-high seven points Saturday.
Freshman makes most of
playing time for Bulldogs
By NICK PARKER

Does head coach Mark
Pox play the players that
give him the best chance to
win, knowing they can’t
sustain 40 minutes of play
every game?
Or does he take his
lumps, heaping minutes
upon freshman backups,
knowing full well that he
isn’t as comfortable with
them in the game?
It’s a conundrum that
Pox has been attempting
to find the answer to all
season. The first-year
coach has leaned heavily
on his starting backcourt
made up of guards Dustin
Ware and Ricky McPhee,
forcing them to play what
he’s called “an unreason
able amount of minutes.”
Georgia’s win Saturday
over No. 20 Vanderbilt
might have helped in
answering that question
for Pox —and the answer
was not discovered by
choice.
Pox had to rely heavily
on freshman backup point
guard Vincent Williams
because starting point
guard Dustin Ware was lim
ited, suffering from the flu.
And the message from Fox
was simple.
“[Coach Pox] just told
me what I had to do: just
run the team," Williams
said.
Despite averaging only
1.4 points per game and
playing only six minutes
per game in SEC play head
Women’s golf claims fourth in tourney
By NICK PARKER
The Red & Buck
Georgia women’s golf
team had two players
Marta Silva Zamora and
Emille Burger finish in
the top-five individually.
But even the brilliant
play of Zamora and Burger
weren’t enough to counter
act the effects of having to
count a final-round 83, as
Georgia finished in fourth
at the Lady Puerto Rico
Classic, hosted by Trump
National Golf Club In Rio
Grande, Puerto Rico.
"We were one good score
away from finishing higher,”
head coach Kelley Hester
told Georgia Sports
Communication. “Emilie
played really well. She con
tinues to come on. Marta
was solid. I was proud of
the way Kendall [Wttght]
fought back today. [ Carolina
Andrade] struggled with
her putter and Teas was
2-under through four but
ing into the Vanderbilt
game. Williams thrived in
the more prominent role,
notching a career-high in
points (7) and assists (4) in
16 minutes of action.
Pox was even comfort
able enough with Williams
down the stretch to count
on him for 10 second-half
minutes, including two
minutes playing alongside
Ware in the backcourt.
“[Vincent] knew he was
going to have to play a lot
because Dustin has had
the flu, and we’ve worked
with some crazy lineups to
try to think about rotations
and how we could match
up the other day and
Vincent gave us some really
significant minutes and
some very good plays,” Fox
said.
Williams was able to
step up for the Bulldogs
and handle the pressure
applied by the Vanderbilt
defense. That stingy
defense led to Georgia best
offensive output in a half
this season, scoring 49 sec
ond-half points.
“I knew I was going to
have to carry the team
because Dustin was sick. I
was excited because I knew
when I got in I was going to
basically just try to carry
the team,” Williams said.
And although sopho
more forwards Travis Leslie
and Trey Thompkins pro
vided the bulk of the scor
ing load as usual, perhaps
no bucket was more impor
tant than Williams 3-point
er with 3:53 left in the sec-
couldn’t keep it going.”
Zamora, a sophomore
who has already won twice
this season, finished tn a tie
for runner-up at 4-under
par 212 three shots back
of medalist Caroline
Hedwall of Oklahoma
State closing with
a final-round 1-over
par 73. Burger con
tinued her impressive
freshman campaign
with a fourth place
finish at 3-under-par,
her second top-five
finish of the season.
Unfortunately for
the dynamic duo, the
rest of the Georgia
squad couldn’t uphold their
end of the bargain, aa No.
10 Georgia the second
highest ranked team in the
field finished fourth in a
16-team field.
Freshman Wright fin
ished in a tie for 35th at
230; senior Andrade ended
up in a tie for 56th at 236
and sophomore Teas

ond half, which stretched
the Georgia lead to 11.
“I’ve been expecting
Vincent to come in and
play hard all year. He’s a
great player, and he showed
it [against Vanderbilt],”
Thompkins said of Williams.
“He showed he can play
with the best of them.”
Added McPhee: “He was
a huge factor in our win
[against Vanderbilt]. He
was able to knock down
some big shots for us, han
dle the pressure and made
some plays down the
stretch.”
He may have also
showed Pox and the start
ers that their backups can
contribute meaningful min
utes in the second half of
league play.
“It was a big help,”
Leslie said of Wiliam’s con
tribution. “He came out
and gave us a lot of help off
the bench. Normally we
don’t have a lot of players
coming ofTthe bench.”
For a team looking to
finally close out its first
road game tonight at
Auburn, Williams’ contin
ued growth could spell
great news for Georgia’s
chances in the second half
of SEC play.
Fordham posted 68th at
240. Sophomore transfer
Klara Hayashida placed
80th, competing as an indi
vidual
“We have some things to
work on, which is exactly
what you would
expect this time of
the season,” Hester
said. “We’ll get back
to Athens and con
centrate on those
things and get bet
ter prepared for
our next time out.”
Georgia started
the day in second.
But finished with
its worst round of
the three-day tournament,
13-over-par 301, dropping
them to fourth l6 shots
back of winner Alabama.
Georgia will have just
over three weeks to work
