“SPJ is one of the more prestigious
journalistic societies in the country,”

Collegiate Press are considered the
two highest.”
The paper’s first place entries will
continue through competition at the
national level, and the national award
winners will be decided in September.
The University’s competitive region
includes schools from Alabama, South
Carolina and Florida.
“We were named paper of the year

awarded first and second, but no
third.”
The Red & Black won an award in
every writing category and photogra

CRIME NOTEBOOK
Football players cleared from taxi
incident
According to a Monday Athens-
Clarke County news release, police
have concluded that the offenders in
a simple battery and terroristic
threats investigation were not
University football players.
The whole football team was in the
spotlight after it was alleged four indi
viduals, whom the victims believed to
be football players, harassed and
struck a married University couple in
a taxi on March 28. According to the
Athens-Clarke County police report,
the offenders harassed the victims,
making statements such as “turn
around if you want to live.”
The offenders were dropped off at
East Campus Village.
Although Monday’s release reports
one football player was in the taxi, it
states he “acted as a peace maker
and tried to calm the situation.”
The release also states the other
three individuals are residents of
Heard County, and warrants are
pending.

“It’s fairly prestigious, it’s kind of a
big deal that we do well in these
things," Morales said. “The fact that
we continually win a certain amount
each year is an example that we’re
rather good at what we do.”
Morales and the rest of the news
paper staff are very selective about
which pieces they enter in the compe
tion, and this year’s winning ratio is
the best the paper has seen.
“I sent in 20 entries, and we won 17
awards, so it’s 85 percent which is
pretty awesome we're pretty selec
tive, we usually try to send our best in
each category,” Morales said.
Specific staff members also
received other recognition.
Opinions Editor Yasmin Yonis
recently won the Harry S. Truman
Scholarship. She said her involvement
with various Grady College programs,
along with the help and inspiration of
her professors, gave her the opportu
nity to apply and receive the award.
She will receive $30,000 for graduate
school education.
Editor-in-Chief Chelsea Cook,
Managing Editor Daniel Burnett and
Associate News Editor Mimi Ensley
also received scholarships. Each was
awarded a $1,500 scholarship from
the Atlanta Press Club.
“We have people win that every
year,” Morales said. “I mean, we have
the top student journalists in the
state. That’s something I don’t think
anyone would argue with.”

Four Macbooks reported stolen
With hand scanners and 24-hour
desk assistants, Russell Hall may
seem like a pretty safe place to keep
your door unlocked. As four
University students woke up Sunday
morning, however, they learned their
belongings may not be as secure as
they once believed.
Pour Macbook laptops, valued at
$7,519, were reported stolen from
three separate Russell dorm rooms on
April 4. All three of the seventh and
eighth floor residents reported leaving
their doors unlocked, and there were
no signs of forced entry.
In at least one of the burglaries, a
resident was asleep in the room at the
time of the theft.
