8 Thursday, April 8, aoio | Thb Red a Black Play pits art against science Comedy studies 20th century By ANNE CONNAUGHTON The Red & Black Left brain vs. right. Intelligence vs. creativity. Einstein vs. Picasso. Science and art clash once again, this time in a comi cal debate of the effects each has made on the 20th cen tury. This is the plot of the hit off-Broadway show, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” put on by the Town and Gown Players and showing at the Athens Community Theatre beginning Friday. Written by Steve Martin, the comedic play features Einstein and Picasso sitting at a cafe in Paris discussing which of the two is destined to be the more influential figure of the century. Supporting characters add to the comedy, including a surprise visitor at the end of the show. Director Allen Rowell said “Picasso at the Lapin Agile" was an obvious choice of play for the Town and Gown Players. “It’s contemporary and modem, and I think Steve Martin is still very much in the public mind as an enter tainer and celebrity,” he said. “Besides, the play is an entertaining way to discuss what the 20th century has amounted to.” Rowell started with Town and Gown 20 years ago, working his way up from the chorus of musicals to prin ciple roles. As his involvement grew, he served on the board, and this will be his seventh show as a director. His philosophy as a director is not to present radical interpretations of the plays he directs, but to stay true to the script. "People think yoq have to do something strange to make it your own,” he said. “I think that distracts from the performance. The point [of why] we chose it, is because it has been a success. If you do it well, if it’s cast well, set well, with great theater tech, something magical will happen in front of a live audience.” This passion is evident onstage. “I think people will see a level of quality above any thing,” Rowell said, “I want the play to engage them and send them home laughing.” Aside from the performance itself, audience members will get a little extra at the matinee opening weekend; as Town and Gown collaborates with the Georgia Museum of Art. Lynn Boland, curator of European Art at the Georgia Museum of Art, will be present to lend his expertise on the art of the time period featured in “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” Rowell said Boland’s appearance should be a good way to incorporate additional context into the theme of the play.
